Popular Endurance Sports

Endurance sports are activities that put a lot of stress and strain on your body over a sustained period. There are many different types of endurance sports. This article will look at some of the most popular examples.
Endurance swimming
Long distance swimming is one example of a popular endurance sport; a distance of over 1,508 metres is considered a long distance swimming race. You may spend hours in the water as part of training for a long distance swimming event or race. Most long distance swimming events occur in open water such as lakes, seas and rivers; however, some can take place in large swimming pools. To train for a long distance swimming event, athletes need to be aware of the water conditions and replicate them where possible. Training in open waters with a current is much more beneficial if the race is going to be in the same type of water. Doing your training in still warm water won’t be enough to prepare your body for the extreme temperatures and additional endurance you will need for open water swimming.
Long distance running
Over 40,000 people choose to take part in the London Marathon each year, which is an extreme distance of 26.2 miles. This is one of over 800 marathons organised worldwide every year. It takes a huge amount of training and dedication to prepare for a marathon; some people spend their entire life training and running marathons for enjoyment and as part of their fitness regime. However, for some athletes running a marathon isn’t enough of a push on their bodies. They go even further and run ultra-marathons, which vary between 31 and 100 miles. This is an extreme endurance sport which pushes the body to the limit. Some ultra-marathons use trails as opposed to standard marathons that are typically run on roads.
For people with no running experience, it will take around six months minimum to prepare for a marathon. Following a free marathon training plan and eating a balanced diet are two of the most basic things a person can do to train for a marathon. Many marathon runners also add energy gels into their training; they provide them with easy-to-digest carbohydrates that allow the runners to push themselves further and run longer distances more easily. Athletes can also use during any endurance sport to improve performance and restore much-needed energy when they feel their stores are depleted.
Endurance cycling
Endurance cycling is a popular choice for people who love pushing their bodies to the limits and covering long distances to see and experience new places. There are various types of endurance cycling, including; road racing, mountain biking, and gravel biking. Each of these endurance cycling sports uses different tracks and types of bikes. Road bikes are designed to be lightweight and fast on the road. They have thin tyres, a forward leaning position and dropped handlebars. These features improve the aerodynamics of the bike, which enables the bike to travel at much higher speeds. Mountain bikes have suspension, a more upright position and thicker, wider tyres. This helps them travel over rough, rocky terrain more easily, protecting the rider from falls. Gravel biking is a medium between mountain biking and road biking. The paths are unpaved but aren’t as rough as mountain bike trails.
Endurance climbing
Climbing long distances and for extended periods of time requires a huge amount of strength and endurance. Climbers who like to test their endurance choose hard outdoor climbing routes that take hours, if not days, to complete. Getting to the top of this type of route is extremely challenging, but at the same time, it's incredibly rewarding. Even novice climbers regularly work on endurance training to allow them to tackle bigger challenges and higher walls. Some people classify climbers into endurance climbers and power climbers. Power climbers use strength and power to climb routes quickly, whereas endurance climbers take their time but can hold their position for much longer.
These are the most popular endurance sports. If you want to push your body to the limit and take on a new challenge, an endurance sport is a great way to do this.
