First, a chip, then a crack. It happens a lot.

A chipped windscreen always has the potential to crack. Your windscreen is a tough piece of vital glass in your vehicle, but when compromised by a chip (e.g. from a stone), it sometimes doesn't take much for that chip to crack. That tiny chip might not look like much as it's only small in comparison, but many factors can cause this damage to worsen, potentially costing you a new windscreen. These include:
Sudden temperature changes
Bumpy terrain and vibrations
Pressure on the windscreen
Direct impact of any kind

The before and after of a chip repair.
Every chip repair will look different (as the initial chip can vary greatly). The chip repair process will leave a small blemish on the windscreen where the chip was that will not interfere with the driver’s vision. In most cases, our windscreen chip repair will look better than the unrepaired damage, but it will not make the chip repair entirely invisible.

9.Amend FAQ answer for this question “What about the cosmetic appearance of the chip repair?”

The chip repair process will leave a small blemish on the windscreen where the chip was that will not interfere with the driver’s vision. See our before and after example above <link to section above>. In most cases, our windscreen chip repair will look better than the unrepaired damage, but it will not make the chip repair entirely invisible. However, the important thing is the chip was fixed before it cracked, saving your windscreen.
If you are unhappy with the cosmetic appearance of the repaired chip, we will replace the windscreen and deduct the cost of the chip repair from the cost of the replacement windscreen from O'Brien®. For more information on our Auto Workmanship Guarantee, see

Can all windscreen chips be repaired?
To learn about how your windscreen chip is assessed for repair at O'Brien plus what causes a chip to crack, please see our video.
<insert video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XTM_S76JJoc>

In most cases, a windscreen chip can be repaired by O'Brien® if:
· the chip is located at least 5cm from the edge of the windscreen.
· it is in front of the driver, the entire chip (including all off-shooting cracks) is smaller than a 5-cent coin.
· it is in on the passenger side, the entire chip (including all off-shooting cracks) is smaller than a $1 coin.
Your expert technician will check all of these factors (plus a few other technical ones) when assessing your windscreen damage to determine if the windscreen chip is suitable for repair by O’Brien®.

How do O’Brien® repair a windscreen chip?
After assessing the chip damage and determining it can be repaired using our Advanced Repair Technology (ART) system, our expert technicians will:
Clean and prepare the area to allow the resin to bond with the windscreen properly.
Place the (ART) device over the damage and create a clean vacuum.
Fill the chip with a special resin. It’s our best ever!
Ensure the ART device pushes the resin right to the end of any micro-cracks.
Use a UV light to harden the resin.
Clean and polish the windscreen and remove any excess resin to ensure a smooth finish.

(Can image be included in these answers? If so, need to use image from current Chip Repair brochure)
What happens if a windscreen chip repair fails?
In some rare cases, attempting to repair a windscreen can make the chip bigger. This is due to small micro-cracks emerging from the initial impact that cannot be controlled by our technicians.
However, don’t worry. If the repair fails or if the repair is visibly distracting to the driver, we will deduct the chip repair cost from the cost of our windscreen replacement service.
Is a chip repair better for the environment?
Compared to replacing a windscreen, repairing a windscreen chip by far the the greener choice. A windscreen weighs about 14kg, so when you replace it, not only does it need to be disposed of, but you also need to factor in the resources involved in producing, transporting and storing the new windscreen.
Repairing a chip means your existing windscreen stays in place, and two small empty capsules (which held the primer and resin) are the only waste. This is just one of the reasons why we recommend getting a chip repair assessed quickly, to ensure you can save your existing windscreen, rather than needing a replacement.
