Biotrace+ Video Dimmer

The Video Dimmer in BioTrace+ is a feature that overlays a window on any open application, such as YouTube, Netflix, or a game. While it does not control the content of the underlying window, it provides feedback training by adjusting screen brightness and volume.
The Video Dimmer adjusts screen brightness and volume based on signal positions relative to a target zone or an inhibit threshold. In the target zone, these levels increase, creating a reward state, while they decrease outside the target zone or in an inhibit state. Users can customize the rate of change and minimum brightness levels, applying these settings across different BioTrace+ screens according to defined thresholds.

STARTING BIOTRACE+ AND THE VIDEO DIMMER

Start BioTrace+ via the desktop icon.
When BioTrace+ starts, the main menu appears as usual. You can find the new VideoDimmer under the SCREEN menu. This feature lets you control brightness and volume with any physiological signal shown by BioTrace+. You can set thresholds and training targets to adjust the signals up or down.

After this the VideoDimmer will appear on your desktop. You can drag it to the (secondary) monitor you want to control on top of any application that is running in a window. Examples: YouTube, NetFlix, computer games running inside a window, Media Player, DVD player etc.

When starting the VideoDimmer, it will by default show a darkened image, this is normal. The Video dimmer software gets the state of the training signals from BioTrace+ as follows:
Is a signal in the TARGET zone or not?
Is there an inhibit?
Video Dimmer behavior on signals in/out of target:
Signal in target zone: brightness increases and volume increases till maximum level (100%)
Signal outside target zone: brightness decreases and volume decreases till the minimum levels. (the user can define these)
Note: when the signal is in the target zone, this creates a REWARD state.
Video Dimmer behaviour on Inhibit states:
When there is an inhibit, the brightness and volume decrease to a minimum which by default is 10%. (definable by the user)
When the inhibit state is released - the brightness and volume increase again. When the signal is NOT in the target zone, the brightness and volume will increase somewhat but stay quite low. (10-20%) Only when the signal is in the target zone, will the brightness and volume increase to 100%.
Note; when a signal is above or below the inhibit level (threshold) this causes an INHIBIT state.
User definable settings;
By right-clicking on the VideoDimmer window, you can view the settings:

In this menu you can select parameters such as:
How quickly the brightness/volume changes (fading in and out) when there is a reward (in target zone)
How the INHIBIT state changes the brightness.
What the minimum brightness level (after complete fade out) is.

SCREEN DESIGN AND THRESHOLD STATES

You can use the NeXus VideoDimmer with most BioTrace+ screens. In principle all training screens have training target zone (rewards) set either ABOVE or BELOW the threshold.
On top of the target zone settings, often an INHIBIT level is also set either ABOVE or BELOW a threshold. Below we show a simple example of a basic design.

In this screen the REWARD state is driven by the SMR (green bar) threshold, and occurs when the current SMR level is ABOVE threshold. When that happens the brightness and volume will increase.
The INHIBIT state is driven by the EMG artifact level. When the INHIBIT (above EMG threshold) occurs, the brightness and volume will decrease. (rapidly) By default in this screen when SMR goes BELOW the threshold. The INHIBIT state is triggered. For some cases you may only want the INHIBIT state to decrease brightness and volume, when an actual inhibit state occurs, not when the training state (reward) is not reached.IF you don’t want that, you can change this option, by right clicking on the SMR bargraph (in this example) and changing the below threshold setting to No feedback.
