Lasts don't come with labels

Lasts don’t come with labels
or warnings or signs
They’re just things that happen
like any other time

They don’t make themselves known until after the fact
When it’s certain
the threshold’s
been crossed and can’t be crossed back

I followed my heart but there was always a
wrenching I thought would
before time was up

The torque came loose over weeks over months
but it had been there
so long
that the torquing was me

And as it let go, I found
it wasn’t the last time I was with you
but also the last time
I was with me
