Each facilitator brought their own laptop (to manage projects, track attendance and support where needed)
Mobile hotspots (provided by Molo Mhlaba and sometimes by Mindjoy facilitators)
Set-up 🛠
We purchased 12 Samsung Galaxy A23s. Mindjoy organised with Molo Mhlaba to have a classroom set-up for the coding club with tables, chairs and access to the WiFi for all devices. 2 Molo Mhlaba teachers were always present in the room to observe and learn.
Mindjoy’s coaches 🧑🚀
2 Mindjoy coaches were present in each session to facilitate, observe, and guide students through their coding journey by giving real-time feedback on their code, supporting them through difficult challenges, celebrating their progress, and reviewing their projects.
Mindjoy’s coaches come from a wide variety of backgrounds, including Engineering, Accounting, Teaching and Health Sciences. All Mindjoy’s coaches have undergone extensive coaching training to ensure exceptional quality of coaching.
Coding Projects 📱
All Molo Mhlaba students started off with Mindjoy’s Python Fundamentals project track and then changed over to Mindjoy’s Python Turtle Graphics project track, which is aimed at beginner coders. These project tracks cover the basics of Python, and include a mastery project which tasked students with creating a website wireframe! This project track gave all students exposure to fundamental coding concepts such as algorithms, variables and debugging, while also encouraging creative and computational thinking.
Organising with Molo Mhlaba 🤝
Mindjoy already had intros to the Managing Director and School Head for Molo Mhlaba, and had previously run a Hackathon for their Grade 3 and 4 girls, so liaising for logistics was fairly simple and quick. The Molo Mhlaba team is very hands-on and were available to the Mindjoy team at all times, whenever assistance was needed. All communications happened via email, WhatsApp or in person.
Molo Mhlaba liaised with parents to ensure learners were collected from the school after 14h00, and to get Media Release Forms signed to ensure the process could be documented.
Mindjoy also brought in a vetted filmmaker and editor to the first and last sessions to document the pilot, interview Molo Mhlaba staff and speak to the students about their experience.
Mindjoy went to Molo Mhlaba a week before the launch of the pilot to discuss classroom needs and logistics, get the Molo Mhlaba team excited and to also open discussions with the learners and tell them about the 6-week programme.
