Expendio de Maiz
La Condesa
Cash only
I love this place, their mezcal is SO GOOD. Definitely get the mezcal.
Check out their website for the full experience / more context.
No reservations and they close at 6, so get there early.
There is no menu - they will keep bringing you dishes until you are full.
2
Contramar
La Condesa
This place has a stellar reputation; it’s known for the half red / half green grilled fish.
No reservations and they close early, get there early.
Known as a leisurely lunch spot.
3
Finca Don Porfirio: Cafe in the Sears Building
Centro
Ok, yes, this is in the Sears building... slightly odd, however the view is incredible. Worth it for that. Go up to the 8th floor.
4
Chilpa
Hipodromo
“The best chilaquiles in Mexico City” - I agree. GO here.
Don’t get the fried chips, get the baked chips - they soak up the sauce better.
5
Cafe Tacobar
Go for drinks
6
Ojo de agua
Crazy smoothies and drinks
7
Molino el Pujol
Amazing bites, casual lunch spot- get there early as they run out of a lot of stuff
8
Pasteleria Ideal
Insane and giant cake and sweets store; baked goods, etc.
This spot is the real deal - during Dia de los Muertos EVERYONE (tourists, locals, etc.) goes here.
9
Taquerias Arandas
Centro
Amazing tacos in a crazy building... see if you can get a table on the 3rd floor.
Lengua tacos are apparently delicious...I did not try them lol.
Al pastor is fire.
10
Bosforo
Really good mezcal place and you should eat crickets there — I did not go here but it was highly recommended by a friend.

Rosetta
Delicious fancy food. I did not eat here but it was highly recommended by a friend.

1
Huitlacoche
Must try while in Mexico; this is a corn fungus that is actually really delicious. I was very skeptical - worth trying.
2
Machetes
This is in the Guerrero neighborhood which is not the safest, if you know someone in CDMX see if they can go with you.
Machetes are long, thin quesadillas and they are to die for. Probably my favorite food that we tried in CDMX.
Order the Squash Flower, Chicken Tings, and Huitlacoche machetes.
