Chapter: 06. Food We Get From Plants

Differentiate between Trees, Shrubs, and Herbs.
Trees are large and tall plants characterized by their strong, thick, woody stems called trunks, which are protected by hard bark. They live for many years and develop deep, strong roots. Shrubs are smaller than trees, typically growing close to the ground, and have thin, hard, brown stems, living for a few years. In contrast, herbs are small and weak plants with thin, green, and soft stems, and they usually live for only a few months.

Explain the characteristics and growth habits of Creepers and Climbers.
Creepers are plants distinguished by their weak stems, which prevent them from growing upright. Instead, they spread out or “creep” along the ground, often producing large fruits like watermelons and pumpkins. Climbers also possess weak stems and cannot stand straight independently. They overcome this by growing upwards, taking support from surrounding structures such as walls, sticks, or other plants. Examples include money plants and grapevines, which wrap around supports to ascend.

Describe the various food items we obtain from plants.
Plants are a primary source of diverse food items essential for our diet. We consume various parts of plants as vegetables, including roots like carrots, leaves such as spinach, stems like potatoes, and flowers like cauliflower. Many fruits, such as oranges and apples, are eaten directly, while some fruits like tomatoes are also used as vegetables. Additionally, plants provide edible seeds like nuts (almonds, walnuts) and food grains, which include cereals (rice, wheat) and pulses (peas, kidney beans). Beyond these, we obtain cooking oils, flavorful spices, and ingredients for beverages like tea and coffee, along with sugar from plants.

Elaborate on the importance of plants as sources of medicines.
Many plants are invaluable sources of medicines, referred to as medicinal plants, which are utilized to treat various health conditions. For example, Tulsi leaves are widely recognized for their ability to alleviate cough and cold symptoms due to their healing properties. Cloves provide a natural remedy for toothaches, offering effective relief. Neem is highly regarded for its antiseptic qualities, making it excellent for curing skin infections and killing germs, and it’s even found in toothpastes and soaps. Additionally, fennel seeds are beneficial for promoting a healthy digestive system.

Discuss the overall importance of plants in our daily lives.
Plants are vital “green friends” that profoundly impact our daily lives, contributing far more than just food. They are the source of numerous essential products, including medicines, wood for construction and furniture, rubber, gum, various oils, paper, and perfumes. Beyond material goods, plants are crucial for environmental well-being; they keep our surroundings beautiful and, most importantly, produce oxygen, keeping the air fresh and clean for us to breathe. Their multifaceted contributions highlight their indispensable role in sustaining life and enhancing the quality of our environment.
