Chapter: 05. The Story Of Fidgety Philip

Explanation for Self-Learning
The “Language Lab” section focuses on helping you understand and pronounce consonant blends. A consonant blend happens when two or more consonant letters come together in a word, and you can still hear the sound of each individual letter. They are different from digraphs (like ‘sh’ or ‘ch’), where two letters make one new sound.
For example, in the word ‘stop’, you can clearly hear both the /s/ sound and the /t/ sound blended together. Similarly, in ‘spoon’, you hear both the /s/ and the /p/ sound.
To practice these blends for self-learning:
Listen Carefully: Pay close attention to how native speakers pronounce words with these blends. Try to isolate the individual sounds within the blend.
Say Aloud Slowly: Start by saying the blend on its own (/s/ + /t/ = /st/, /s/ + /p/ = /sp/). Then, add the rest of the word very slowly, stretching out the blend.
Practice with Words: Read lists of words that contain these blends, focusing on hearing and pronouncing each sound distinctly within the blend.
Identify in Reading: As you read, try to spot words with these blends. This will help you recognize them automatically.
Mastering consonant blends improves your pronunciation and helps you read new words more accurately.
Answers to Exercises
A. Listen to these words and practise saying them aloud.
This exercise is for listening and pronunciation practice. When you say words like “stair,” “stuck,” “sting,” “stage,” “study,” “stand” (all with /st/ blend) and “spot,” “speak,” “sport,” “spoon,” “spark,” “spa” (all with /sp/ blend), notice how both the ‘s’ sound and the ‘t’ or ‘p’ sound are clearly heard.
B. Now, work in pairs and read the poem aloud. Then, tick - communication the words with /sp/ sound and circle the words with /st/ sound in this poem.
