Chapter: 13. The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz

Character Profiles: Traits and Relationships

Dorothy
Traits: Kind, compassionate, determined, resourceful, protective (especially of Toto), brave (slaps the Lion), polite, helpful, and empathetic. She feels “awfully sorry” for the Scarecrow and takes action to help the Tin Man.
Relationships:
Toto: Her loyal and beloved dog, constant companion.
Scarecrow: Friend and travel companion; she helps him off his pole and invites him to join her quest to ask Oz for brains.
Tin Man: Friend and travel companion; she diligently oils his joints and invites him to join her quest to ask Oz for a heart.
Lion: Friend and travel companion; she bravely scolds him for threatening Toto and then invites him to join her quest to ask Oz for courage.
The Great Oz: The primary destination of her journey, as she seeks his help to return to Kansas.
Toto
Traits: Lively, active (chasing birds and squirrels), loyal to Dorothy, initially cautious or fearful of new characters (like the Tin Man and Lion), but capable of forming friendships.
Relationships:
Dorothy: His owner and closest companion.
Tin Man: Barked sharply at his tin legs.
Lion: Initially feared due to the Lion’s attempted attack, but eventually grows to be “good friends” with him.
Scarecrow
Traits: Believes himself to be unintelligent due to being stuffed with straw and having “no brains,” but is articulate and capable of conversation. He is polite, grateful, and expresses his boredom with his previous task. He is also observant (sees the cottage).
Relationships:
Dorothy: Relies on her for physical help (getting off the pole) and joins her on the journey, hoping Oz can give him brains. He is a supportive travel companion.
Tin Man: Helps Dorothy oil his joints.
Lion: Encourages the Lion to join them, seeing the possibility of Oz granting his wish for courage.
Tin Man (Tin Woodman)
Traits: Initially immobile and rusted, expressing discomfort (“groaning for more than a year”). He deeply desires a heart, believing himself incapable of feeling. He is grateful for help and thoughtful (appears to think deeply).
Relationships:
Dorothy: Relies on her and the Scarecrow for physical help (oiling his joints). Joins their party hoping Oz will grant him a heart.
Scarecrow: Benefits from his assistance in getting oiled.
Lion: Understands his desire for a missing quality, having a similar need for a heart.
The Lion (Cowardly Lion)
Traits: Despite being the “King of Beasts,” he is a self-proclaimed coward, easily frightened, and admits his heart beats fast with fear. He roars loudly to scare others, but this is a cover for his own fear. He genuinely desires courage.
Relationships:
Dorothy: Initially attempts to intimidate Toto, but quickly becomes submissive after being scolded. Joins the group to seek courage from Oz, forming a friendship with Dorothy.
Toto: His initial target, but they eventually overcome their differences and become good friends.
Scarecrow & Tin Man: Relates to their desires for qualities they believe they lack, and becomes a fellow seeker of Oz’s gifts.
