C. Think and answer.
Heidi’s grandfather did quite a few things for her. Would you agree that building a relationship requires kindness and love? Give reasons for your answer.
Yes, I would definitely agree that building a relationship requires kindness and love. In the story, Grandfather, though initially silent, showed kindness through his actions: he put away Heidi’s things, made her a bed of hay, cooked her a meal, and even built her a custom chair. These acts, though simple, conveyed care and acceptance. Heidi, in turn, responded with joy and trust, demonstrating her budding affection. Without these acts of kindness and the underlying care they represent, it would be difficult for two people, especially a child and a new guardian, to form a strong and loving bond. Kindness creates comfort and safety, while love nurtures connection and belonging.
Heidi wakes up in the morning and feels that her surroundings are ‘gleaming with gold’. The story suggests that nature’s beauty is priceless when compared to material goods. Discuss your thoughts on this topic in class.
The phrase “gleaming with gold” when Heidi wakes up highlights how the natural beauty of the mountains, illuminated by the sun, feels immensely valuable and precious to her. This contrasts sharply with the idea of material goods. In Grandfather’s simple house, there are no luxuries, yet Heidi finds immense joy in the scent of hay, the sound of the wind, and the golden sunlight. This suggests that true richness isn’t found in expensive possessions, but in the experiences and sensory wonders that nature provides. Things like fresh air, sunlight, stunning views, and the simple act of living in harmony with the environment are often more fulfilling and enduring than anything money can buy. This idea encourages us to appreciate the natural world and find happiness in simplicity rather than constantly seeking more material wealth.
