B. Fill in the blanks with correct words from the help box. locate east atlas brown symbols
When we face north east is on our right.
A book of maps is called an atlas.
The mountains and highlands are shown in the colour brown.
A legend on a map explains the symbols drawn on a map.
A grid helps to locate places on a map.
C. Answer these questions orally.
What is a globe?
A globe is a model of the Earth that helps us to understand its actual shape and locate continents, countries, oceans, seas, and different places.
What is a compass?
A compass is an instrument that always points towards the north direction, helping us to find directions while travelling.
Name the cardinal and ordinal directions.
The four cardinal directions are north, south, east, and west. The ordinal directions are north-east, south-east, north-west, and south-west.
Name the features of a map.
The features of a map are directions, scale, colours, symbols, and grids.
D. Answer the questions.
Why are maps better than globes?
Maps are better than globes because they are drawn on a flat surface, making them easier to use and carry anywhere. They can also show more details about a specific place than globes.
Name the different colours used on a map. What do they stand for?
The different standard colours used on a map and what they stand for are:
Blue: Water bodies (like oceans and seas).
Brown: Mountains and highlands.
Orange: Plateaus.
Yellow: Deserts.
White: Snow-topped areas.
Green: Lowlands and plains.
What is a grid? How does it help us?
A grid consists of lines drawn on a map from north to south and from east to west, with each line having a number or an alphabet. The grid helps to accurately locate places on a map.

Think Box

A cartographer was asked to draw a map of the newly discovered island near Australia. To do this, he has to book a helicopter ride to complete his task. Why?
A cartographer would need a helicopter ride to get an aerial view of the entire island. This allows them to observe and accurately map the island’s overall shape, geographical features (like mountains, rivers, coastlines), vegetation, and other important details from an elevated perspective, which is crucial for creating a comprehensive and precise map of an unknown area.

Picture Study

Today, in big cities, people don’t rely on paper maps anymore like they used to. There are other devices that help us find places. Can you identify the object in the picture? What does it do and where can we find it?
image.png
The object in the picture is a car navigation system (or GPS device/screen).
It displays digital maps and provides directions, often turn-by-turn, to help people find specific locations and navigate routes.
We can find these systems integrated into car dashboards, as standalone portable devices, or most commonly, as applications on smartphones.

Life Skills and Values

Read the directions and write the name of the places in the blanks.
Excuse me, how can I go to the school? Walk along Violet Street. Take the first turning on the right. Go straight on. It’s on your right, opposite the church.
Sir, can you tell me the way to the fire station? Of course. Walk along Lily Street. Keep walking northwards till you reach the fire station and then take a left there. Keep going straight, it’s just opposite the school.
