Quick Check 1

List the things that Togo, the dog can do while Barky, the toy cannot. One is done for you.
Togo can move on its own. Barky cannot move on its own.
Togo needs food, air, and water. Barky does not.
Togo can grow. Barky cannot.
Togo can feel. Barky cannot.
Togo can reproduce (in theory). Barky cannot.
Togo breathes. Barky does not.

Quick Check 2

Fill in the blanks.
A bird is a living thing, but a rock is a non-living thing.
Just as a dog breathes through its nose, a grasshopper breathes through its spiracles.
A snake crawls by moving its whole body. A fish moves using its fins and tail.
Puppies grow into dogs, but kittens grow into cats.

Non-living Things:
Examples:
Table
Stone

II. Short Answer Questions

What are natural things?
Natural things are things that are found in nature and are not made by humans.
Write ‘L’ for features of living things. Write ‘NL’ for features of non-living things. a. A snake crawling on the ground * L b. A boy jogging in the park * L c. A kite flying high in the sky * NL d. A moving fan * NL
List and count the number of living/non-living things and natural/human-made things in your classroom.
This answer will vary based on the student’s specific classroom observations.
The touch-me-not or Mimosa plant cannot move from one place to another. Is it a living or a non-living thing? Why?
It is a living thing because although it does not move from place to place, it can move its parts (its leaves close when touched) and it breathes, grows, needs food and water, and reproduces.
Name any four animals that lay eggs.
Chicken
Turtle
Snake
Butterfly
The following non-living things are made with the help of living things. Name these living things. a. Wool * Sheep b. Jam * Fruits (e.g., strawberries, peaches) c. Cotton shirt * Cotton plant d. Pencil * Wood (from trees)
On the basis of the characteristics of living things, differentiate between: a. Plants and animals * Plants make their own food, animals do not. * Plants are fixed in one place, animals can move from place to place. * Plants breathe through stomata, animals use lungs, gills, etc. b. Nose and stomata * Nose is an organ for breathing in humans and animals. Stomata are pores on leaves for breathing in plants. c. Turtle and horse * A turtle lays eggs, a horse gives birth to its young ones. * A turtle has a shell, a horse has a mane and tail. * Both are living things, breathe, move, grow, and feel.

III. Long Answer Questions

‘Living things feel.’ Explain with examples.
Living things can sense and respond to changes in their surroundings. For example, when you touch a hot object, you feel the heat and immediately pull your hand away. A dog uses its nose to smell and find food. Plants can sense sunlight and grow towards it. The touch-me-not plant’s leaves fold when touched, showing it responds to touch.
How does growth take place in living things?
Growth is a process where living things increase in size and change their shape. For example, a baby grows into a child and then an adult. A seed germinates and grows into a plant. This involves obtaining nutrients, energy, and undergoing cell division and development.
What is reproduction? Give examples.
Reproduction is the process by which living things produce new individuals of their own kind. This ensures the continuation of the species. For example, a hen lays eggs, which hatch into chicks. A cat gives birth to kittens. A seed grows into a new plant.
Why do living things need food?
Living things need food to get energy for all their activities, to stay healthy, and to grow. Food provides the necessary nutrients for the body to function and develop.
Complete the table showing differences between living and non-living things.
S. No.
Living Things
Non-living Things
1
They need food, air and water to live and grow.
They do not need food, air or water.
2
They breathe.
They do not breathe.
3
They can move from one place to another on their own (except plants, whose parts move).
They cannot move from one place to another on their own.
4
They can feel.
They cannot feel.
5
They grow.
They do not grow.
6
They reproduce.
They do not reproduce.
There are no rows in this table

IV. Challenge

Living things grow. If we add wooden stands to the legs of a table, the height of the table will increase. Can we call this table a living thing? Why/Why not?
No, we cannot call the table a living thing. The table’s height is increasing because of an external addition (wooden stands), not because it is growing internally from within like a living organism. Living things grow by internal processes, using food and energy, and they also reproduce and feel, which a table does not.
Living things respond to their environment and non-living things do not. You would have seen animals moving. Give two examples of plant movement that you have observed.
The leaves of the touch-me-not plant close when touched.
Plants grow towards sunlight.

V. Enrichment

A. Field Visit
This answer will vary based on the student’s specific observations during a park visit. B. Project
This answer will vary based on the student’s specific observations and comparisons.
