Chapter: 13. The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz

A. Answer these questions.
How did Dorothy and Toto get to the strange land?
Dorothy and Toto were picked up by a dangerous cyclone that swept across the Kansas prairie.
What did Dorothy want the Great Oz to do for her?
Dorothy wanted the Great Oz to send her back to Kansas City, her home.
What did the Tin Man need an oil-can for?
The Tin Man needed an oil-can to oil his joints, which were badly rusted and prevented him from moving.
Why was the Lion ashamed of himself?
The Lion was ashamed of himself because he was supposed to be the King of Beasts but was actually a coward.
What was the Yellow Brick Road paved with?
The Yellow Brick Road was paved with yellow brick.
B. Answer these questions with reference to the context.
“I’m awfully sorry for you.” a. Who said this and to whom? * Dorothy said this to the Scarecrow. b. Why did the speaker feel sorry? * The speaker felt sorry because the Scarecrow believed he had no brains and was stuffed, thinking himself foolish. c. What was the other character’s reaction or hope after hearing this? * The Scarecrow immediately asked if Oz would give him some brains if he went to the Emerald City with Dorothy.
“This is a great comfort. I have been holding that axe in the air ever since I rusted, and I’m glad to be able to put it down at last.” a. Who said this and what was the “great comfort” referring to? * The Tin Man said this, and the “great comfort” was being able to move his arms and put down the axe after his joints were oiled. b. What had the speaker been doing for a long time? * The speaker had been standing perfectly motionless, holding his axe in the air, ever since he rusted, which was for more than a year. c. How did this comfort affect the speaker’s physical state after it happened? * After receiving comfort, the Tin Man’s joints (neck, arms, and legs) became free from rust and as good as new, allowing him to move freely again.
C. Think and answer.
Describe how Dorothy’s journey with her new friends reflects the idea of “strength in numbers.”
Dorothy’s journey clearly shows strength in numbers. Alone, she might have been too frightened or overwhelmed by the strange land and dangers like the Lion. However, with the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Lion, they face challenges together. They help each other physically (like freeing the Tin Man) and emotionally (by offering companionship and support). Each character brings their unique perspective and perceived needs, which paradoxically make them a stronger, more complete group capable of facing their journey to Oz.
The Cowardly Lion believes he is not brave. What is one way he shows leadership or a quality befitting the “King of Beasts,” even with his fear, in this part of the story?
Even with his fear, the Cowardly Lion shows a quality befitting the “King of Beasts” by being a deterrent to other wild animals. Dorothy herself acknowledges this, stating, “You will be very welcome for you will help to keep away the other wild beasts.” While he believes his roars are only effective because others are more cowardly, his presence and loud roars still command respect and fear from others in the forest, protecting the group from potential dangers.
If you were writing a sequel to this chapter, what might be the first challenge Dorothy and her new group of friends face together, and how might their combined strengths help them overcome it?
Example Answer: If I were writing a sequel, the first challenge might be crossing a wide, deep river that blocks the Yellow Brick Road. The Scarecrow, with his lack of weight and straw stuffing, could float easily. The Tin Man, being made of tin, could possibly be pulled across or form a human chain if there are stepping stones. The Lion, though scared, could use his strength to pull ropes or push through obstacles on the riverbank. Dorothy would be the brave leader, encouraging them all. Their different bodies and “flaws” would become their strengths to cross the river.
