I. Comprehension Check
A. Match the following:
Worked hard but was poor. -> c. The Shoemaker
Arrived at midnight. -> a. The Elves
Became incredibly rich. -> b. The Shoemaker and Wife
Made perfect shoes very quickly. -> a. The Elves
Bought shoes for twice the price. -> e. The Boys
B. Fill in the Blanks:
The shoemaker went to bed with a light heart because he had left his troubles to God.
The job was perfect, and so the shoes were a masterpiece.
The shoemaker and his wife decided to stay up all night and hide behind a curtain to see who was helping them.
C. Answer in Short:
What did the shoemaker always do every evening before going to bed?
Every evening, he would cut out the leather and prepare it for the next day’s work.
What did the shoemaker find on his workbench the second morning?
The second morning, he found two pairs of perfectly made shoes waiting on his workbench.
Why did the shoemaker and his wife decide to make new clothes and shoes for the elves?
They decided to make gifts for the elves because they were incredibly grateful for all the help and kindness they had received, and they saw that the elves’ own clothes were old and torn.
What happened immediately after the elves put on their new clothes and shoes?
They were delighted, danced around happily, and then left the house without working, never coming back again.
D. Think and Answer:
What does the story tell us about the importance of being kind and grateful? Give examples from the story to support your answer.
The story shows that kindness and gratitude are very important. The elves were kind to the shoemaker by helping him when he was poor, which allowed him to become rich. In turn, the shoemaker and his wife showed great gratitude by making new clothes for the elves. This act of giving back showed their appreciation and brought a happy end to the elves’ work, proving that kindness often leads to more good.
How would the story be different if the shoemaker and his wife had never tried to find out who was helping them?
If the shoemaker and his wife had never found out who was helping them, they might have continued to become richer, but they would have missed the opportunity to show their gratitude directly to the elves. The elves might have continued working anonymously, or they might have eventually left without the touching moment of receiving gifts. The story’s lesson about reciprocated kindness would not be as strong.
