Heidi smelled the sweet scent of hay in the room under the roof.
Grandfather cut a big piece of cheese and put it near the fire until it was golden-brown.

Grandfather used four long sticks to build Heidi’s chair.
Two of Grandfather’s goats were named Snowy and Brownie.
B. Answer these questions with reference to the context.
“It’s a lovely bed!” * a. Who exclaimed this? * Heidi exclaimed this. * b. What was the bed made of? * The bed was made of hay, covered with pieces of hard brown cloth. * c. Why was the speaker excited about this bed? * The speaker was excited because it was a unique and comfortable bed that she made herself, and it was in a room under the roof with a beautiful view of the mountains.
“So you can think for yourself! That’s good!” * a. Who said these words? * Grandfather said these words. * b. What had the listener done to prompt this praise? * The listener, Heidi, had taken the initiative to get the bread, plates, and bowls from the cupboard and put them on the table for their meal. * c. What does this reveal about the speaker’s expectations of the listener? * This reveals that Grandfather values independence and self-reliance. He appreciates that Heidi is capable of thinking and acting on her own, rather than needing constant direction.
C. Think and answer.
Heidi chose to sleep in the hay loft, and Grandfather built her a special chair. How do these small details show that Grandfather truly cared about Heidi’s comfort and happiness, even though he didn’t say much?
Grandfather’s care is evident in his actions. Allowing Heidi to choose her own sleeping place (“Wherever you want”) showed respect for her preference and comfort. Building a chair specifically for her, so she could reach the table comfortably, was a thoughtful gesture that addressed her needs directly, indicating his genuine concern for her well-being and happiness, even without many words.
The story describes Heidi waking up to everything “gleaming with gold.” Imagine you are Heidi. Describe what you see, hear, and feel in that moment, focusing on the beauty of nature around you.
As Heidi, I would wake to a dazzling golden light streaming through my little round window, painting my hay bed and the rustic room in warm hues. I’d hear Peter’s cheerful shouts calling the goats outside, a familiar mountain sound. I’d feel a deep sense of happiness and peace, knowing I was in this beautiful, wild place, ready for another day of adventure with Grandfather and the lively goats. The mountain air would feel fresh and invigorating.

G. Write a Paragraph Write a short paragraph about ‘My Favorite Place in Nature’. Use the hints given below.
Where is it? (e.g., forest, beach, garden, mountain)
What does it look like? (colors, sounds, smells)
What do you do there?
How does it make you feel? (peaceful, happy, energetic)
Why is it your favorite?
(Example Answer - Student’s own answer will vary) My favorite place in nature is a small, quiet forest near my house. It’s filled with tall green trees, and in the spring, colorful wildflowers bloom on the forest floor. You can hear the gentle rustling of leaves and the cheerful chirping of birds. When I go there, I love to walk on the soft, mossy paths, breathe in the fresh, earthy smell, and sometimes even spot a squirrel or two. This place makes me feel incredibly peaceful and calm, as if all my worries fade away. It’s my favorite because it offers a perfect escape from the busy world, allowing me to reconnect with nature’s beauty and find inner quiet.
