Section D: Explanations of Terms (5 Marks)
Solar Energy: The energy we get from the Sun, which provides us with heat and light.
Season: A period when weather conditions remain mostly the same for a long time.
Renewable Energy: Energy obtained from sources that will not run out and can be replenished naturally, like the Sun or wind.
Solar Panel: A device made up of many solar cells that converts sunlight directly into electricity.
Non-renewable Energy: Energy obtained from sources that are limited in quantity and will eventually run out, such as coal or petrol.
Section E: Short Answer Questions (15 Marks)
Plants get their energy from the Sun. They use this energy, along with carbon dioxide and water, to manufacture their own food through a process called photosynthesis.
Three uses of solar energy include heating water using a solar geyser, cooking food in a solar cooker, and producing electricity through solar panels.
Changes in seasons are caused by the movement of the Earth as it orbits around the Sun. This movement results in different parts of the Earth receiving varying amounts of direct sunlight throughout the year.
In summer, I like to eat mangoes and watermelons. In winter, I prefer apples and carrots.
Two ways to conserve water at home are to fix any dripping faucets promptly and to turn off the tap while brushing your teeth instead of letting the water run.
Section F: Diagram-Based Question (5 Marks)
The category of energy sources shown on the left side of the picture is Renewable Energy.
The category of energy sources shown on the right side of the picture is Non-renewable Energy.
The sources on the left side (Sun, wind, water) are considered better for the environment because they are clean and do not produce harmful pollutants or greenhouse gases when used. In contrast, the sources on the right (coal, oil) release smoke and gases when burned, contributing to air pollution and climate change.
Section G: Long Answer Questions (10 Marks)
Weather significantly affects our daily life in several ways. For food, hot weather makes us prefer cooling items like watermelon and cold drinks, while cold weather leads us to warm beverages and root vegetables. For clothing, we choose light-colored cotton clothes in summer to stay cool, but in winter, we need thick, warm woollen clothes and blankets to keep warm.
It is important to conserve energy because many of our energy sources, especially non-renewable ones like coal and petrol, are limited and will eventually run out. Wasting energy also contributes to environmental problems. Four practical ways to save energy in daily routine include: switching off lights and fans when not in use, taking shorter showers to save water and heating energy, walking or cycling for short distances instead of using a car, and opening blinds on sunny winter days to use natural warmth and reduce heating needs.
