Aviary is a robust platform designed to streamline and enhance the management and accessibility of digital content. With a focus on seamless integration, Aviary offers a range of possible connections to external systems that amplify its capabilities. Here’s a closer look at the integrations available within the Aviary platform:

SSO Authentication
Aviary supports single sign-on (SSO) authentication through SAML 2.0, providing a secure and streamlined login experience. This integration allows institutions to manage user access efficiently, ensuring that only authorized individuals can access sensitive content. By leveraging SAML 2.0, Aviary enhances security while simplifying the user experience across multiple systems. Integration with your institution’s single sign-on authentication system comes at an additional fee. For more information, see the Configure SSO for your Site documentation.
External Authoritative Descriptive Systems
Aviary integrates with external authoritative descriptive systems such as ArchivesSpace and Alma. These connections allow for the import and synchronization of descriptive metadata, ensuring that organizations to easily, quickly, and efficiently create and update Aviary resources and maintain accurate metadata across systems, reducing redundancy and enhancing the discoverability. Data Migration Logic and Metadata Mapping Authentication Configuration For each external descriptive system integration, the user must include the API URL and admin user credentials for each system. In the attached screenshot, you can see an example of such configuration settings for ArchivesSpace and Preservica.
External Preservation Systems
Preservation is a critical aspect of digital content management, and Aviary facilitates this through integrations with systems like Preservica and the Internet Archive. Such integration allows organizations to focus preservation activities in a robust preservation system, but automatically provide robust access to their audiovisual content in Aviary.
External Media Streaming Services
While the most common implementation of Aviary is one where audiovisual media files are controlled by Aviary, stored in Wasabi cloud storage, and made accessible via progressive download in our HTML5 media player, organizations can instead choose to stream their media through integrations with popular streaming services such as YouTube, Vimeo, and Kaltura. These connections allow institutions to leverage the powerful streaming capabilities of these platforms, reaching a wider audience and enhancing user engagement.
External Automated Metadata Creation Services
Aviary supports robust metadata creation through integrations with services like OpenAI Whisper, AssemblyAI, Deepgram, IBM Watson, and Trint. These cutting-edge technologies provide automated transcription and metadata generation, enhancing the accessibility and searchability of audio and video content. By integrating with these services, Aviary ensures that users can quickly and accurately generate metadata, saving time and resources while improving the overall quality of content management. For more information, see the Aviary Automated Metadata Services documentation.
External Collections Management Systems
Aviary seamlessly integrates with digital collections management systems like CONTENTdm or Omeka, allowing organizations to embed Aviary’s powerful audiovisual access and discovery tools directly into their existing platforms. While systems such as CONTENTdm and Omeka are well-suited for managing and showcasing images, documents, and data, Aviary is specifically designed to provide an enhanced experience for time-based media, with features like synchronized transcripts, captions, and robust playback controls. By combining the strengths of both platforms, organizations can maintain a unified collections portal that highlights diverse content types, while delivering a specialized and intuitive interface for audiovisual materials—truly offering the best of both worlds.
