Legalism:
used by the Qin dynasty
the Qin also collapsed because the policies were harsh
strict punishment
tattle on your neighbors if they’re violating the rules
as long as the end result is good, it doesn’t matter whatever’s done to get to it
emperors killed a bunch of people if they didn’t follow the rules
Confucianism: founded by Confucius (Kong Fuzi) (551-479 BCE)
opposed by the Qin
they burned a lot of Confucian books and killed Confucian scholars
the ideas weren’t recorded by Confucius, but by his followers
the first to use it was the Han dynasty, which came right after the Qin
be respectful to your elders and those above you in the hierarchy
filial piety
: care and respect your parents and elder family members
good government officials and rulers have a sense of moral integrity and the ability to make fair and wise decisions
they should be well-educated
Ren, Li, Xiao

Li: proper, treat all humans with courtesy, show respect to superiors
Xiao: filial piety
children should respect family elders
children should take care of family elders when they reach old age
children should remember and respect them after their deaths
like long-standing Chinese tradition of ancestor veneration
Daoism/Taoism: founded by Laozi (6th century BCE)
critical response to Confucianism
create social harmony by living according to the natural laws of the universe:
basically: stop trying to control the universe, it’s not gonna work, so just don’t try, stop having ambitions
don’t have to be educated, just know yourself
act selflessly and live simply
feng shui, astronomy, science
everything gotta be balanced like yin and yang
“antigovernment” ideas
somethings are little/seem unpowerful but essential/powerful like water
