left home from Morocco (Tangier) for the hajj in 1325
when he was 21
wouldn’t return home for 24 years
traveled 75000 miles
no companions on his journey to Mecca
he got sick a lot on his journey
he was a busybody
ten marriages but divorced when he leaves
a lot of concubines and lovers
tangier was a trade hub
all these trade networks surrounding
spent two years dictating his travels to an Islamic scholar into a book by the order of the sultan of Morocco after Battuta returns him (about 26 years later from when he left)
his family were Islamic scholars
he was a Qadi (Islamic judge)
could find work wherever in Muslim communities
he kept adding certifications as he went along his journey


prophesized that he would travel to the East
India was the eventual goal
after his Mecca pilgrimage he kept going because he wanted wealth
joined Persian caravan
Persia was Mongol ruled but Muslim
diff Muslim practices than his own which he saw throughout his journey
joined the royal caravan there
traveled 4000 miles in one year
made it to Southern Arabia
went to Ethiopia, coast cities and saw Muslims interacting with African culture
wow Indian ocean trade!
slaves
elites and rulers didn’t share religious ties

mixed cultures
went back to Arabian peninsula
went to the Gulf of Oman
