Our elective was composed of more than just time in hospital. On the weekends, we explored the local Rwandan scenery including the Pictures and videos attached below. (Some videos were too large to be displayed as previews, so they’ve been attached as download links instead)

forest
Nyungwe Forest
Nyungwe a tropical rainforest nestled along the western border of Rwanda, is a vibrant tapestry of biodiversity and natural wonder. Home to over 300 bird species, 13 species of primates, and an untold variety of fascinating creepy-crawlies, it offers a truly immersive experience for nature enthusiasts. Our journey through Nyungwe was brimming with unforgettable moments: we ventured 80 meters above the forest floor on a breathtaking canopy walk, marveled at the striking Great Blue Turacos, playful Colobus Monkeys, and elusive Flying Squirrels, and even learned how to mimic chimpanzee calls.
Adding to the magic was our guide, Shakira, whose wealth of knowledge brought the forest to life. She shared the fascinating medicinal uses of the plants we encountered, each story deepening our appreciation for the ecosystem's complexity. A word of caution, though—if someone offers you a "bitterberry," think twice before accepting it unless you're ready to induce labor!

volcano
Bisoke
Bisoke Volcano, an imposing stratovolcano in Rwanda's Virunga Mountains, offers an exhilarating journey into both adventure and discovery. Standing at 3,711 meters above sea level, this iconic peak is a haven for explorers and nature lovers alike. Our highlights here began with the challenging hike to its summit, expertly guided by our knowledgeable team. Along the way, we dodged stinging nettles and learned the fascinating skill of finding and applying natural antidotes for their sting—a practical survival tip amidst the lush rainforest.
Reaching the top, we were rewarded with the awe-inspiring sight of a crater lake, its serene waters nestled within the remnants of an ancient volcano. Evidence of Gorillas, who had crossed the path before us, added a touch of wild magic to the trek. Our military guides shared inspiring stories of the government's innovative conservation efforts, employing ex-poachers as protectors of Gorillas—called Ingatyi in Kinyarwanda—turning once-destructive hands into guardians of Rwanda’s natural heritage.
The adventure didn’t stop there; a dramatic rainforest storm at the summit turned our descent into an unexpected thrill. Torrential rain stripped our shoes of their grip, forcing us to slide down the volcano, laughter mingling with the sound of the rain.

beach
Lake Kivu
Lake Kivu is a shimmering expanse of freshwater nestled between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, offers a serene escape into nature’s embrace. Our adventure began with a quintessentially Rwandan experience: hopping on safe and efficient local taxis to Kibuye, a charming lakeside town. From there, we embarked on a boat tour that unveiled the lake’s captivating islands, each with its own unique charm.
First up was Napoleon Island, aptly named for its resemblance to the iconic hat, and home to a colony of 4,000 flying foxes whose flapping wings filled the air as we explored. Next, we visited Monkey Island, a lively enclave of 12 cheeky vervet monkeys who nearly made off with Jonty’s backpack—a hilarious and slightly heart-stopping moment! Finally, we reached Amahoro Island, aptly named “Peace Island” in Kinyarwanda. Here, we enjoyed its tranquil sheltered bay, perfect for a refreshing swim without fear of mischievous monkey antics.
And the best part? This unforgettable day of exploration and wonder cost us only R500—a bargain we unanimously agreed was the best R500 we’d ever spent.
