Behaviors for Success

Mindset tips to crush as a Designer at Luxury Presence.

Practice extreme ownership.
is the practice of owning everything in your world, to an extreme degree. It means you are responsible for not just those tasks which you directly control, but for all those that affect whether or not your mission is successful. What this looks like: you don’t make excuses. You go after the information you need to do your job. You own your mistakes and learn from them.

Embody an agile mindset.
Mountaineers conquer big mountains by setting progressive basecamps, and progressing through those in a very focused way. We need to shift from a “design is done” mentality to a “design is never done” mentality — that is, we shouldn’t stop at V1. We need to learn from V1 to inform V2 and so on. This doesn’t mean sacrificing quality — we should still think about at every milestone.

Know the purpose behind your work.
It’s not about mindlessly completing tasks. Ask yourself how the work you are doing contributes to our goals as a company. If something doesn’t make sense, push back and ask questions until you make sure the “why” is clear.

Don’t be afraid to be a leader.
Think of yourself as thought partners to other disciplines (PMs, engineers, marketers, sales, etc.) Think about how you can strategically contribute or lead discussions. Don’t be afraid to suggest ideas, new projects, or ways to make the outcome better.

Embody a high agency attitude.
High Agency is about finding a way to get what you want, without waiting for conditions to be perfect or otherwise blaming the circumstances. High Agency People either push through in the face of adverse conditions or manage to reverse the adverse conditions to achieve goals. More on this

Keep investing in your craft.
There are a lot of aspects that make someone great at what they do. Soft skills like communication, organization, collaboration, etc, are important. However, as designers, a common theme that will always contribute to make us better is to continually invest in improving our craft. Think about how you want to invest in your craft. It could be learning a new prototyping tool, improving our understanding of visual design principles, working on a project that will challenge your motion design skills or story telling.

Challenge yourself and each other.
While trade-offs in the name of speed, scope, etc, will come up, we are in a company and culture that sees Design as a strategic advantage to the business. Use this as an opportunity to challenge yourself to do your best work. To create outputs you are truly proud to add to your portfolio. In the same note, don’t be afraid to challenge others to do their best work. It’s ok to speak up directly if you disagree with a solution, see a quality issue, etc.
