~£5m saved: Optimising design process for next-gen fighter jet

🕓 Apr 2021 → Jan 2022 ~ 8 mo (part-time)
Brief Develop a suite of dashboards to manage the design and manufacture of a prototype ‘Tempest’ aircraft
Solution 5 priority-focused parts-tracking dashboards were developed to highlight manufacturing risks — such as failed tests or missing parts — to prevent expensive mistakes and plan ahead when delays were inevitable
Result Direct savings over 5 years estimated at ~£5 million by a senior engineer. Dozens of hours were saved each week by replacing tedious manual look-ups, improving satisfaction as well as productivity
Key skills Project management: visualising complex dependencies, cleanly Parsing requirements from engineers and commissioning views from the data team

A gamified tool for schools to help ditch plastics

🕓 Jul 2023 5 days Screenshots available
Brief Create an engaging dashboard prototype for schools enrolled in SAS’s anti-pollution programme. The tool should celebrate progress to date, encourage further action, and make students feel part of a wider community
Solution Students are engaged with playful aesthetics and personalised text in a ‘scrollytelling’ style dashboard (long-form, with narrative elements). Context keeps kids invested. Their school is placed in friendly competition — who’s right ahead, or just behind? — and nearest neighbours are shown on a visually appealing map
Key skills Efficiency: distilling business requirements into appropriate designs, effectively transforming and joining unfamiliar data sets, and producing a technically complex yet maintainable workbook — all within 1 week

Key Skill » Quality Control & Validation

Transferable: I have also produced validated workflows in Tableau Prep for 3 clients (and in Dataiku for Ralph Lauren)

Automating audits & validating with data quality macros

🕓 Aug 2023 → Oct 2023~2 months
The problem KPIs were missing and faith was lacking in audit results following a large merger; inconsistent business terms and ungoverned data across disparate teams made aggregation borderline impossible
Liaised efficiently with time-strapped accounting teams to centrally define and formalise business definitions
Replaced convoluted Excel workbooks with documented Alteryx workflows, supported by external documents to describe complex functionality and edge cases. A framework for managing new mapping tables was agreed for hard-coded values, and a new Analytical App allows users to safely input ad-hoc adjustments — both designed to be easy for new Alteryx users
Built several data quality macros, functional with any tabular schema, to auto-fail flows with unexpected results (such as join explosions, null dates or arithmetic errors); failed records were flagged and saved to a database, and the results of each run were automatically collated into a visual report that was saved locally
