This Week’s Bible Story
God can always be trusted (Jeremiah 31). God’s words brought hope to God’s people because His words were true. God can always be trusted. Jeremiah told about a day when God would forgive sin and change people’s hearts. Jesus’ death and resurrection provides forgiveness of sins. Through Jesus, we have new hearts and life with God forever.
Check-in + Worship
As kids check in, invite them to join their parents in the Auditorium during worship. Once the worship set ends, wait in the back for kids to join you and lead them back to the Zion Kids area.
Connect
Invite the kids to circle up and play the Lame Name Game. Let each kid share their name and answer today’s icebreaker question: What is one thing you hope will happen this year? Why is it so important to you?
Bible Story
Look up Jeremiah 31 and teach the Bible passage in your own words. (Optional: Use the story cards provided if you would like visuals.)
Story Overview:
Jeremiah was a prophet to God’s people. He told them messages from God even when they were prisoners in another country.
Jeremiah warned the people that God was going to punish their sin. But even though the people disobeyed God, He did not stop loving them. God had a good plan for His people.
God spoke through Jeremiah. He said, “One day, I will bring My people back to their land. I will be the God of all the families of Israel. They will be My people.” God’s people had been separated, but God was going to bring them back together.
While the people were in Babylon, they were sad. God said, “You will make music again. You will dance with joy!”
God said, “I will turn their sadness into happiness. I will comfort them. My people will have everything they need because I am good.”
God said He would watch over His people like a shepherd guards his flock.
God said, “There is hope for your future!”
Jeremiah said God had a plan to change people’s hearts. God would make a new promise so people could be saved from their sins.
Debrief
How does it feel to know that God never stops loving His people, even when they mess up? What does it mean that God is giving His people a fresh start? What are some ways we can show God's love to others? Activity
Choose one volunteer to be It and stand in the middle of the circle. Instruct them to choose a kid from the circle and try to make them smile or laugh within 30 seconds. Instruct the kid who is not It to resist laughing, if they can. Explain that if they laugh, they are out of the game. If they do not laugh or smile, allow them to be the new It.
TAKEAWAY: You all tried so hard to make others laugh! We don’t always feel like laughing or being joyful all the time, do we? God’s people had times when they were sad too. In today’s Bible story, God said He would turn His people’s sadness into joy.
Prayer Time
Close your small group time by praying with your kids. This week’s prayer focus is on PLEASE PRAYERS. Ask the kids in your group, “Where in your life do you need God’s help?” Take time to pray for each of the things that were shared.
