This Week’s Bible Story

Jesus Calms a Storm (Luke 8:22-25) One day Jesus and his friends sailed across a large lake. Suddenly a big storm came out of nowhere. The disciples were very scared and started panicking. When the disciples looked over at Jesus, they realized that he was sleeping. When Jesus woke up, he commanded the storm to stop and the storm immediately disappeared. His friends were amazed and could not believe what they just saw!

Let each kid answer today’s icebreaker question: Would you rather sail through a storm on a boat or fly through a storm on an airplane? Why?

Bible Story
9:15 - 9:30
11:15 - 11:30

Look up Luke 8:22-25 and tell the Bible story in your own words.
Key Story Points:
One day Jesus and his friends found a boat. “Let’s cross to the other side of the lake,” Jesus said. And off they went! As they sailed across the lake, Jesus took a nap.
Suddenly a big storm came out of nowhere. The boat was tossed back and on forth on the waves and they were very scared.
When the disciples looked over at Jesus, they realized that he was still sleeping. “How could he be sleeping in the middle of a storm like this?”
When Jesus finally woke up, he stood up and shouted, “Stop!” As soon as he said it, the wind stopped blowing and the waves disappeared. All was calm again.
His friends were amazed. They could not believe what they just saw. “Who is this man?” they said. “Even the wind and the waves obey him!” But he was not just any man... he was Jesus!

Debrief
9:30 - 9:40
11:30 - 11:40

Imagine you were on that boat. How would you have responded when the storm came?
Jesus clearly wasn’t worried about the storm at all. Why do you think he was so calm?
What can we learn from this story about how to respond when something scary happens in our lives?

Prayer Time
9:40 - 9:45
11:40 - 11:45

Close your small group time by praying with your kids. This week’s prayer focus will include a PRAYER OF BLESSING. Look up Numbers 6:24-26 and pray it over the kids in your group: “The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.”

Activity
9:40 - 9:45
11:40 - 11:45

Give each child a small piece of clay and challenge them to build a boat!
