This Week’s Bible Story
Jesus Heals the Paralyzed Man (Luke 5:17-26) Jesus did not just say that He was God. Jesus showed that He was God. Jesus forgave sins and performed miracles (like healing the man who could not walk). Jesus did things that only God can do. Faith is believing in and trusting something or someone completely. The friends who lowered the paralyzed man through the roof had faith that Jesus could heal. We can have faith in Jesus’ power today, too.
Monthly Verse: Nothing is impossible with God! LUKE 1:37
Check-in + Worship
As kids check in, invite them to join their parents in the Auditorium during worship. Once the worship set ends, wait in the back for kids to join you and lead them back to the Zion Kids area.
Connect
Let each kid answer today’s icebreaker question: Have you ever gotten really hurt before — like a broken arm? What was it like?
Bible Story
Look up Luke 5:17-26 and read it out loud. Tell the Bible story in your own words.
Key Story Points:
Some men had a friend who could not walk. They believed that Jesus could heal him, so they carried him to the house where Jesus was teaching and healing people. Because the house was so full, they couldn’t get in. So they carried their friend up the steps and they opened a hole in the roof. Then they lowered their friend into the middle of the crowd. They thought Jesus would heal their friend. Instead, Jesus said to him, “Your sins are forgiven.” The religious leaders were very unhappy. “Only God can forgive sins,” they grumbled. “What’s easier?” asked Jesus. “To forgive a man’s sins or make him walk? To show you that I have God’s power to forgive sins, I will heal his legs.” “Pick up your mat and walk home,” said Jesus to the man. And he did! Debrief
What happened to the man who could not walk? (Jesus healed him and forgave his sins.) Why were the religious leaders very unhappy? (They grumbled that only God can forgive sins.) What can we learn about Jesus in this story? How might that connect to our lives today? Prayer Time
Close your small group time by praying with your kids. This week’s prayer focus is on PRAISE PRAYERS. Ask the kids in your group, “What is one thing you love about God?” (You may need to prompt kids with ideas.) Take time to pray for each of the things that were shared.
Activity
Hand out the materials to the kids and instruct them how to build their own mat. Have them take the strings and tie them through each of the corner holes of the mat. Then they can decorate their mat and their person cutout.
