This Week’s Bible Story

Jesus Tempted in the Desert (Luke 4:1-13) Jesus went into the wilderness where he fasted for 40 days. The devil knew that Jesus was very hungry, so he tried to tempt him through a series of tests. Each time, Jesus resisted and reminded the devil of what God told us in the Bible. Because everything God says is good and true!
Monthly Verse: For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. EPHESIANS 2:10

Bible Story
9:15 - 9:30
11:15 - 11:30

Look up Luke 4:1-13 and tell the Bible story in your own words.
Key Story Points:
One day, Jesus went into the wilderness. While he was there, he did not eat any food for 40 days and he was very, very hungry.
The devil knew that Jesus was very hungry, so he tried to test him. “If you are really the Son of God, then tell this rock to become a piece of bread,” he said. But Jesus did not fall for it. “People need more than bread — they need God’s Word too.” Jesus passed the first test!
So the devil tried to think of another way to test Jesus. This time he took Jesus to a really high place where he could see the whole world. “All you have to do is worship me and I will let you have the whole world,” he said. But Jesus did not fall for it. “The only one that we should worship is the one true God.” Jesus passed the second test!
Finally, the devil took Jesus to the very top of the temple and said, “If you really are the Son of God, then jump off and let the angels catch you.” But Jesus did not fall for it. “You must not test God.” Jesus passed the third test!
Every time the devil tried to test Jesus, he said “No!”. Instead, he reminded the devil of what God told us in the Bible. Because everything God says is good and true!

Debrief
9:30 - 9:40
11:30 - 11:40

What were some of the ways the devil tried to tempt Jesus?
How did Jesus resist the temptation?
How can we resist temptation like Jesus did?

Prayer Time
9:40 - 9:45
11:40 - 11:45

Close your small group time by praying with your kids. This week’s prayer focus will include a PRAYER OF BLESSING. Look up Numbers 6:24-26 and pray it over the kids in your group: “The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.”

Activity
9:40 - 9:45
11:40 - 11:45

Remind kids that the first test that Jesus faced was to turn stones into bread so he could eat. Give each child a smooth stone and encourage them to decorate it with the supplies provided. Share with the kids that their stones can serve as a reminder of how we can resist temptation just like Jesus did.
