This Week’s Bible Story

Remember and Celebrate. The nation of Israel had special celebrations throughout the year. Each one was a way that they remembered something that God had done. This weekend we’ll be reviewing some of the celebrations, and setting aside some time to remember and celebrate the things that God has done for us too!

Bible Story
9:15 - 9:30
11:15 - 11:30

In the Old Testament, God told the people of Israel to host festivals throughout the year to remember all of the things that He had done for them. Here are a few of them!
Feast of Passover: The people celebrated how God freed the people from slavery in Egypt. God instructed them to offer a lamb as a sacrifice so they would be safe. One day, Jesus would take the place of a lamb to save us too!
Feast of Pentecost: The people celebrated how God gave them the book of the Law. Many years later, God would give them another special gift on Pentecost: the Holy Spirit!
Feast of Shelters (or “Tabernacles”): The people celebrated how God provided for them while they were wandering through the desert for 40 years. (During the festival, people would stay in tents to remember what it was like for the Israelites in the desert.) It’s a reminder that just as the people of Israel were waiting on God to lead them to the Promised Land, we now wait on God to lead us into our forever home in heaven!
Each of these special holidays highlighted ways that God had shown up for His people in a powerful way. The celebrations were a way of remembering what God did so they would never forget His goodness and faithfulness.
What can we remember and celebrate in our own lives? (Give kids a chance to share. Consider doing an “open mic” for testimonies.)
