This Week’s Bible Story

Isaiah (Isaiah 6-9) God gave Isaiah a message about the Messiah. He didn’t know who this Messiah would be but we do. The child’s name was Jesus. And he wasn’t just anyone’s son, he was God’s son.
Monthly Verse: Today your Savior was born in David’s town. He is Christ, the Lord. LUKE 2:11 (ICB)

Let each kid answer today’s icebreaker question: What’s the best news you’ve ever received?

Bible Story
9:15 - 9:30
11:15 - 11:30

Look up the Bible passage and tell it in your own words.
Key Story Points:
Isaiah was a prophet who lived more than 700 years before the birth of Jesus. He wrote an entire book of the Bible filled with all of the messages God gave him for the people of Israel.
But Isaiah wasn’t always a prophet. He was just an ordinary person who had an encounter with God that changed his life.
Read Isaiah 6:1.
Now, you might think it would be exciting to see God, but Isaiah was actually terrified. He suddenly realized he wasn’t following God the way he should have. God wasn’t angry with Isaiah. God’s heart was full of forgiveness, and he had something special for Isaiah to do.
Read Isaiah 6:8.
God was looking for someone to be his prophet, the one who would carry his message.
Being a prophet was not easy. Sometimes they had to tell God’s people that they weren’t following God, that they were making wrong choices. And that’s not something anyone wants to hear.
But God also gave Isaiah a promise of hope. He gave Isaiah a message about the Messiah, the one who would come to save people from those wrong choices. Isaiah made a courageous decision to follow God, and because he said “yes” to God, he got to tell everyone about this extraordinary promise.
Read Isaiah 9:6.
Isaiah didn’t know who this Messiah would be — the child that God promised. But we do. The child’s name was Jesus. And he wasn’t just anyone’s son, he was God’s son.
God sent his own son to be the Messiah, to be the saving one. And he used Isaiah, an ordinary person like you and me, to tell everyone about it.

Debrief
9:30 - 9:40
11:30 - 11:40

What would you do if God asked you to carry his message? Would you be scared?
When Isaiah said we were “walking in darkness,” what did he mean? Who is the “great light?”
If God kept his promise to send Jesus, what does that tell us about his other promises? Will he keep those, too?
What can we learn about God in this story?
How does that connect to the way we live our lives today?

Prayer Time
9:40 - 9:45
11:40 - 11:45

Close your small group time by praying with your kids. This week’s prayer focus is on THANK YOU PRAYERS. Ask the kids in your group, “What is something good that you can thank God for?” Take time to pray for each of the things that were shared.)

Activity
9:40 - 9:45
11:40 - 11:45

Give each child a piece of construction paper and invite them to write a Christmas card inviting a friend to church for Christmas!
