This Week’s Bible Story

Nehemiah and Ezra (Nehemiah 1-4) Nehemiah knew it would take a lot of work to rebuild the walls. But he also knew that God would help them. We can also know that God will help us when we choose to follow and obey Him.
MEMORY VERSE: We put our hope in the Lord. He is our help and our shield. PSALM 33:20

Check-in + Worship
8:45 - 9:30
10:50 - 11:30

Make sure you are stationed with your check-in roster by the designated rows for Legends inside the Auditorium. As kids check in, encourage them to participate in worship. Once the worship set ends, lead the kids back to the Zion Kids area.

Connect
9:30 - 9:40
11:30 - 11:40

When you come back, split into two small groups: one for 1st-2nd Grade and another for 3rd-5th Grade. Consider finding a place at the courtyard tables or on the grass to do small group time.
Invite the kids to circle up and let each kid answer today’s icebreaker question: What is the most impressive thing that you’ve ever made?

Bible Story
9:40 - 9:50
11:40 - 11:50

Look up the passage and tell the Bible story in your own words. Feel free to read as much of the Bible story as you like or select a few of the highlighted passages below to read out loud as a group.
Nehemiah 1:3-4
Nehemiah 2:1-6
Nehemiah 2:17-18
Key Story Points:
Nehemiah was the cupbearer to King Artaxerxes of Persia.
Nehemiah heard that Jerusalem was in ruins and that his friends there were in trouble, so he asked God to help them.
God gave Nehemiah the courage to speak to King Artaxerxes.
Nehemiah asked if he could go to Jerusalem and help them fix their walls, and the king agreed.
Nehemiah left for Jerusalem. When he got there, he realized things were even worse than he’d heard.
“This will be a big job,” he told the people, “but, with God’s help, we can rebuild these walls.”
Everyone worked in families and groups fixing the gates first.
When they started rebuilding the walls, their enemies laughed. But as the walls grew higher, those enemies became afraid and prepared to attack.
So God’s people worked with a tool in one hand and a sword in the other.
After just 52 days, the wall was finished! Ezra, the priest, read God’s law to the people. They promised to obey God’s law and praised Him for protecting them.

Review
9:50 - 10:00
11:50 - 12:00

Use the story cards provided to review the Bible story with your small group. (Pro Tip: If there are a lot of kids, try breaking off into two groups so that each kid has a chance to participate.)
EASY: Lay out the story cards on the floor in random order. Challenge kids to work together to put them in the right order. (Make it more interesting by having each child hold a card and then challenge them to line up in the right order.)
MEDIUM: Switch things up by laying the cards out in random order, but this time leave one card missing. Have them put the cards in order and see if they can find out which part of the story is missing!
HARD: Lay the first story card on the floor and then ask, “What comes next?” Once the kids guess the next part of the story, lay the story card down and repeat for each of the remaining story cards.

Debrief
10:00 - 10:10
12:00 - 12:10

What was the first thing Nehemiah did after he heard that Jerusalem was in ruins and his friends were trouble?
How was Nehemiah a good leader?
How can you be like Nehemiah?

Activity
10:10 - 10:20
12:10 - 12:20

Split your group into two teams and give each team a set of building supplies. Set a timer and let each team build “the walls of Jerusalem”. Once the time is up, let each team share what they built.

Prayer
10:20 - 10:25
12:20 - 12:25

Close your small group time by praying with your kids. This week’s prayer focus is on THANK YOU PRAYERS. Ask the kids in your group, “What is something good that you can thank God for?” Take time to pray for each of the things that were shared.)

Play Time + Check-out
