The Night Journey and the Ascension contain many noble meanings. This night occurred at a time when the Prophet, ṣalla alla̅hu ʿalayhi wa-sala̅m, was facing intense oppression and adversity. He had just experienced the 'Ām al-Ḥuzn (Year of Sorrow); yet despite his grief, he displayed unwavering faith, patience, and perseverance. This Journey was a gift from Allah to His beloved Prophet, saaws, at a time when he was overwhelmed by tribulations; a sign that Allah had not abandoned him, showing him his high status by bringing him before His Presence.
This journey also served to strengthen his community in times of great need. In the same way, when commemorating this event, we remember that Isra' and Mi'raj represent an inner journey towards the depths of our spirit, into the embrace of the Almighty. It is a reminder that after difficulty, comes ease.
"So, truly with difficulty — ease; truly with difficulty —ease." 94:05-06
Our own spiritual journey, from this world to the next, can be seen as a reflection of the Prophet's Isra` and Mi'raj. However, we do not have to travel through space and time to be in the Divine Presence or to see His signs; these are found in the entire creation, for those who reflect.
Inshallah, we will contemplate on the vertical and horizontal aspects of this Journey, through the practice of reading and writing sacred teachings. We will also be able to actualize the prescriptions designated by Allah for our travels, such as as-salah, ad-dhikr and ʾadʿiyah (supplication).
“And He shows you His signs; and which of Allah's signs will you deny?” 40:81
