Location: Uvarovo, Russian Fediration Client: The Uvarovo Municipal Council (Tambov region, RF), AB Dominanta Partners/Team: , KSP-M, AFF Lab, et al. Typology: Brownfield regeneration, Urban Park Project scope: Strategic project proposal (Economy, Sociology, Architecture, Urban Planning, and Sustainability) Description
Uvarovo is the youngest city in the Tambov region.
The design area—the pond in the 2nd microdistrict—is located in the central part of the city, within walking distance of the main public spaces.
The project aims to address three key problems of the area:
Untapped natural potential The area’s isolation from the city’s developing cultural and event programs Lack of activities for different population groups Due to a strong identity tied to the city’s industrial past and the boom of the chemical industry, the project concept is called “The Formula of Uvarovo’s Prosperity.” The formula consists of three main elements:
Romanticism, realized in the recreational walking zone around the pond called “Cherry Ravine.” This part of the territory is inspired by the image of a picturesque park with a water surface and green slopes, correlated with the cherry orchards and the “cherry identity” of Uvarovo. To complete the romantic image of the area, picturesque ruins and attractive artifacts are missing. The language of new infrastructure elements and art objects uses traditional forms (arches, bridges, rotundas, etc.), which in a contemporary interpretation become art objects and create a new iconic spatial identity for the area.
Exchange of experience, knowledge, emotions, and goods, realized in a new activity hub with a multifunctional pavilion, a marketplace, and an amphitheater. The architectural and spatial solutions for this part of the area refer to the image of an estate, continuing the romantic mood of a picturesque garden, and allude to the main attraction of the Uvarovo district—the estate museum of composer Sergey Vasilyevich Rachmaninov in the village of Ivanovka. The “amphitheater-estate” has the potential to become another venue for Uvarovo’s actively developing event program.
Youth activity, the third important component, is concentrated in the youth zone—the “Street Culture Ravine.” This territory is intended for active recreation and sports and has the potential to become the main attraction and a communication place for young people.
