Breakout 2a: Problems, Desired Outcomes and Getting to Results

This total breakout is scheduled for 25 minutes total.
When working to develop outcome and desired result statements be sure to always try to elevate the statement to the highest level you can so that it intersects with as much as possible when using the “community lens.”
Here are three, very high level, “desired results” statements to consider. “Race no longer predicts:
Workforce (or career) outcomes.”
Life health outcomes.”
Wealth equity outcomes.”

1. Start by identifying problems and observations

❕ Choose a facilitator to keep the group on task for this exercise. YOu can use problem statements already brainstormed earlier or add new ones, below.

Each person can type new problem statements out loud using the green button below, or participants can say their ideas / problem statements out loud (may need a recorder or the facilitator can help) - these problem statements will be used to form desired results in the second half the exercise.

Examples problems and observations:
"People of color are not retained or promoted in our organizations"
"Our procurement processes are dominated by white owned businesses"
"We do not really work on, let alone solve, the biggest environmental issues in our most vulnerable communities"

2. Convert these into desired results

❕ Desired results are in many ways the inverse of problems. What would be the result of eliminating the problems? Later we will get to what we can do to address the problem or observation.
Example results:
Race doesn’t predict promotion chances
Race doesn’t predict procurement award outcomes
Race doesn’t predict access to safe and affordable drinking water

3. Add possible visions of results

Example experiments:
We have people of color in all parts of our management, on our boards, and in key positions to make decisions
People of color, from communities we serve that are most vulnerable, are part of our procurement solution teams to deliver better services
People of color get priority access to Hetch Hetchy and other pristine, awesome tasting, safe, and cheap water

4. What indicators can we use to best indicate how we envision the results?
