Podcasts

I listen to podcasts while I work, whether it’s drawing, sewing, or cooking. Here are some of the ones that I’ve listened to over the past few months.
The Penumbra Podcast is an audio drama following the brooding private-eye Juno Steel as he tangles with an elusive homme fatale and tries to figure out where the hell his life is going. So far there’s only been one cisgender straight person on this podcast, and it’s one of Juno’s childhood friends. Juno himself is nonbinary, and refers to himself as a lady and uses he/him pronouns. This story is one I’ve been following since last year and it means a lot to me to hear stories about people who aren’t cis and straight.
The Magnus Archives is the first horror podcast I’ve listened to. At the Magnus Institute, an institute devoted to investigating supernatural occurrences, Jonathan Sims is the new head archivist and is trying to reorganize the archives after his seemingly incompetent predecessor mysteriously vanished. As he records and sifts through the statements in the archives, he slowly realizes that these events might have more of a connection than he thought. This podcast also seems to be pretty queer, however none of the characters have been confirmed as trans. The main character is asexual and attracted to men, and a lot of the people around him are queer as well. I’d heard good things about the podcast before quarantine started and decided that this would be a good time to start listening to something new. I’ve never liked horror much before but this has definitely opened my eyes to a new genre I very much like.
The Adventure Zone is the first podcast I’d ever listened to. It was recommended to me by my grade 10 english teacher, and boy howdy was it amazing. I’m not ashamed to admit that I sobbed when the first story ended. Even though the four people who do the podcast, three brothers and their dad, are all cis and straight, they still make a big effort to represent the queer community.
My Brother, My Brother and Me is a podcast by the same brothers from The Adventure Zone. They host an “advice show for the modern era” where they receive questions from viewers and give terrible advice to try and help. There have been many times where I’ve been on a walk by myself or with the dog and I’ve absolutely lost it while listening to this podcast. I have spilled hot chocolate all over myself while trying to take a sip.
