Tips on writing good observations
Do 🙌
✅ Write down what you saw with your eyes
✅ Write what you heard with your ears
✅ Give context for consumers of this data, ex: “A design director, first using Figma, said, after exploring for 30 minutes...”
✅ If interpreting, acknowledge conjecture (ex: “After 3 minutes the participant had not found the create “community page”; this could mean we have a discoverability issue).
Try to avoid 🚫
🚫 Writing solutions (ex: the participant needed a better login button)
🚫 Stating interpretations as fact (ex: “the participant was totally confused by the modal and didn’t like it”)
