CAPE PITTOSPORUM, KARO, KOHUHU, MOCK ORANGE,
QUEENSLAND PITTOSPORUM, VICTORIAN BOX.
Easy-to-grow, glossy-leafed evergreen shrubs and trees native toAustralia, New Zealand, Japan, China, and South Africa, used as common landscape plants in zones 9 to 10. They are fairly drought-tolerant once established and not fussy about soil; they grow well in either sun or shade, but tend to legginess in deep shade. Pittosporums produce fragrant white owers followed by rounded seedpods full of sticky seeds (their Latin name means “sticky seeds”), which may present a litter problem, especially with P. undulatum. The fragrance of some Pittosporum, especially P. tobira, can be intense, particularly on warm, still summer evenings, and this fragrance may be allergenic for odor- sensitive individuals.
There are at least two new allergy-free OPALS selected female cultivars of Pittosporum; see chapter 4.

CONCERN - WILL IT GROW TOO BIG and constantly have to be CUT DOWN??
A large evergreen shrub or small tree with dark green, elliptical, aromatic foliage used as a flavorful seasoning. Small greenish yellow flowers in spring are followed by black berries.
BAY, GRECIAN LAUREL, ROMAN LAUREL, ROYAL BAY, SWEET BAY,
SWEET LAUREL. (Laurus nobilis, male, pictured above.) A large, fairly
slow-growing evergreen tree (or shrub) with aromatic leaves that are
used in cooking. Hardy to zone 6, the sweet bay is a popular large
container plant. The males of these separate-sexed trees produce
abundant allergenic pollen. Allergy to the pollen is fairly common, and
cross-reaction allergies caused by eating foods avored with the leaves
are also not uncommon. Laurus is not usually sold sexed except for the
cultivar ‘Saratoga’, which is a male and should not be used. Several new
female cultivars are now in initial production and eventually will be sold
with #1 ranked OPALS tags on them (see chapter 4). Female trees can be planted close together to make a thick evergreen pollen-free hedge.
Quite drought-tolerant, it will grow in sun or shade, and is sometimes
used in cold winter areas as a houseplant.

10-20 feet
MUST ASK FOR ALL-FEMALE/FRUITING ONLY.
An evergreen shrub that forms a vigorous, upright, multi-trunking hedge. Adaptable to pruning and training. Bright to dark green leaves are glossy, narrow, serrated and aromatic when crushed. Yellow flowers in spring are followed by waxy purple berries. Attracts birds and butterflies. Coastal California native.
Wax myrtle (Myrica species) bushes make clusters of the small sweet-
smelling, waxy berries only if they’re female. The exception to this is the
Pacic wax myrtle, Myrica californica, as these can be all-female, all-
male, or monoecious. With this species it is best to buy either an
OPALS-tagged fruiting plant or one that actually has fruit on it when you
buy it.
Evergreen or deciduous shrubs or trees,
many native to the United States. All Myrica berries yield a wax that is
used to scent candles and perfumes. Some people are sensitive to the
smell of Myrica, and even more are allergic to the abundant pollen from
the male plants. Many species of Myrica are separate-sexed, but female
plants are hard to ?nd. In the near future there will be some select all-
female cultivars released of both northern and southern wax myrtle.
These will be sold with an OPALS #1 ranked tag and will make great
hedge plants. A heavy fruiting cultivar of California wax myrtle is also in
the works. Wild birds eat the berries. Myrica is drought-tolerant once
established, and also is generally pest-free.
M. rubra, Chinese waxberry or strawberry tree, has edible fruit;
dioecious, male plants are allergenic.
The small, dark red to purple berries of M. faya are technically edible, though not commonly consumed due to their astringent taste.

Pelargoniums release little pollen, but their fragrance and the smell of
their leaves may aect a few odor-sensitive individuals.

Iceberg Climbing Rose.
?
A
A classic climber, know for abundant clusters of white flowers that continually bloom throughout the season. Flowers have a light honey fragrance. Fast-growing, easily trained stems make it a great choice for a trellis or arbor. Deciduous.
ROSES. (Rosa hybrida, pictured above.) A large group of more than 100species, hardy in all zones, according to species. Allergy to the fragrance of roses is more common than is allergy to the pollen, and any allergic response is usually low to moderate. Fully double roses release far less pollen than single-owered varieties.
Roses grow best in full sun to partial shade and require fertile, well-drained soil and ample moisture to thrive. Many roses are easy to grow from dormant cuttings, which can often be rooted simply by using long cuttings, direct-stuck in a partially shaded spot. Roses are best purchased bare root in spring. Because they are susceptible to many diseases, including mildew, rust, and black spot, many garden roses are heavily sprayed. Both the spores of rose diseases and the chemicals used to control them may trigger allergic responses. Remove and replace disease-prone varieties with disease-resistant ones (a process rosarians refer to as “shovel-pruning”).
The very best roses for an allergy-free garden are highly disease- resistant, have either light or absent fragrance, and are fully double.
Good choices include ‘Sally Holmes’, a disease-resistant single that is a low-pollen producer; ‘Iceberg’, a semi-double white that releases almost no pollen (I’ve found that ‘Iceberg’ is also the best all-around white garden rose); ‘New Day’, a good yellow; ‘Olympiad’, a red; ‘Gene Boerner’, a superior pink; ‘Singing in the Rain’, a salmon-colored rose; and ‘Touch of Class’, a rosy coral hybrid tea that produces minimal amounts of pollen and has won many a blue ribbon.
