Navigating current job market as Latinx engineer

What are we struggling with?

finding motivation given current tech climate
getting experience
landing a job
networking
explaining resume gap
aligning my current full-stack engineer experience with what larger companies are looking for
getting past the auto rejection email
getting over past trauma of job hunt
language and cultural comprehension
interviewing process
finding entry level position that doesn’t require 5 years of experience
finding open source projects to contribute to for juniors

How can we help each other?

accountability partners
connect on LinkedIn
referrals
Huntr tool
Simplify Chrome extension
hype each other up on LinkedIn
optimize your LinkedIn
keyword optimize for roles you want
update profile with courses you take
add location to profile
keep profile open for jobs
reach out to recruiters via LinkedIn messages after applying

How to make Formation more inclusive for Latinx

guest speakers from the industry that are Latinx
teach these recruiting and networking skills to younger/aspiring engineers in college
outreach to Hispanic serving institutions
partner with more organizations that cater to Latinx folks (e.g. Latinas in Tech)
associate with companies/foundations that can provide opportunities for Latinx whether that is in the form of events/scholarships/job opportunities
share with fellows that they don’t need to just go for companies that have heavy DSA questions (since that biases towards folks with that CS background or those who grind on Leetcode)
share virtual Latinx focused events in a dedicated place
the onboarding in general is overwhelming... I’m glad that the Coda document is so detailed, but it can be a lot
recruit/hire more Latinx engineers (I know this is harder than it sounds)
teach algorithms from a math agonistic perspective to better compensate for gaps in our educational backgrounds (how I learned math in my home country is not taught the same as math in USA)
something I really liked about my coding bootcamp was that they provided a subscription to Treehouse so maybe something like that would help students learn on their own if they don’t have a CS background
