Why should you seek out a mentor? Mentors offer valuable insights into non-tradition career paths. If you’re interested in freelancing, working at a startup, or even starting your own company, you should set yourself up for success by talking to people who’ve been in the same boat.
In order to make the most of these sessions, follow these guidelines:
Pick the right mentor
Before you select a mentor, do a little research and make sure it’s a good fit. You can view each mentor’s bio, LinkedIn, and website on their card.
Get prepared & introduce yourself
What do you want to get out of this conversation? You’ll have 15 minutes for your coffee chat, so write a list of questions ahead of time.
Write a bio.
In order to schedule a mentor call, you need to write a short bio about yourself that will help your mentor get to know you. Use the button below to add a bio.
Send an email.
If you schedule your meeting through Calendly, send an email to your mentor after you book your call telling them a bit about yourself and what you hope to cover during your meeting. If you’re scheduling your meeting via email, you can include this information in your meeting request.
Show respect and gratitude
Show up on time.
If you schedule a meeting, honor that time (and show up a few minutes early!). If you must cancel, do so at least 24 hours in advance.
Always send a follow-up after a mentor meeting and be sure to thank your mentor for their time. You should aim to send your thank you note within 1-2 days of your call.
Pro tip: make note of something unique that happened on your call to avoid a generic thank you email
