Deft is hiring

Founding Engineer

We’re looking for a founding engineer to help us pioneer the next generation of search.

Today,
is an SEO-proof e-commerce search engine. But this is just the beginning. As we deepen Deft’s existing natural language understanding capabilities, we’ll be leveraging and creating a variety of cutting-edge technologies to ultimately parse (not just index) the web.

If this seems interesting, send us a quick email at
jobs@shopdeft.com
and we’ll be in touch ASAP!

As an early team member, you’ll help us shape:

Our product (not just its implementation, but its direction)
Our company culture
Our engineering practices
People we hire
Let’s be honest: pretty much everything

You may enjoy working with us if:

You’re energized, not daunted, by the prospect that you’ll be the one
building Amazon+Google’s replacement
.
You want to have a substantial and lasting impact on a
high-growth, seed-funded startup
.
You’re driven by an
inner desire to learn, create, and achieve
, not by an external reward system.
You think about scalability and performance from the beginning, but that doesn’t stop you from writing a quick prototype.
You’re comfortable
working at all levels of the stack
, from infrastructure to backend to frontend.
You’re
excited to code in Clojure(Script)
, and are ready to hit the ground running, even if you haven’t coded in it yet. Nearly all our code is written in Clojure(Script), with some Terraform.
You love working in contexts with little supervision.
You enjoy putting yourself in the shoes of users to
craft a world-class experience
.

Engineers on the team today:

Are deeply
motivated by Deft’s long-term vision
(not just better e-commerce search, but “parsing the web”), and are driven to do whatever it takes to achieve it.
Value
clear, frequent communication
and feedback.
Work to be
supportive
, especially when teammates are faced with new challenges.
Strive for precise thought. We lay well-considered groundwork quickly and build on it iteratively, but we’re allergic to technical debt.

Some things we’ve worked on recently:

Making it possible for a user to combine text and image queries to modify what they’re looking for. (For instance, they could upload an image of a blue couch and say “like this, but in green”.) To do this, we implemented a multimodal search engine with hybrid models.
Automatically making logical sense of a subset of natural language via statistical and symbolic parsing techniques.
Leveraging an ensemble of ML models to extract rich product information.
Building out a performant and scalable inference engine to support more powerful and nuanced natural language queries from our users.
Allowing users to completely customize search results at the individual level (telling us their favorite products / hiding products they never want to see again).

How to get in touch:

If this seems interesting, send us a quick email at
jobs@shopdeft.com
and we’ll be in touch ASAP!
We hire candidates of any race, color, ancestry, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, marital or family status, disability, veteran status, and any other status.
