DECEMBER 2024 UPDATE
- My friends and family contributed ~$1,000 CAD to Ahmed's campaign in Summer 2024. This was immensely helpful for him to purchase the electronics required to perform his new job duties and emergency supplies for his family. Thank you so much. 🫶
- Ahmed has a new nephew, a two month old healthy boy.
- Unfortunately, Ahmed recently lost his job because the startup shut down.
- I (Dannielle Sakher) took over the GoFundMe campaign from Ahmed's friend in Germany.
- After many months of border closures, evacuation may be an opportunity soon. This costs $5K USD/per person.
Given Ahmed's recent unemployment, new nephew to care for, and possibility for evacuation, there is a renewed urgency for his campaign.
If you've already given, please consider giving again. As the crisis is ongoing, it's important that our support is also ongoing.
Other ways you can support is to share the campaign and/or help connect Ahmed to software engineering employment opportunities.
Thank you thank you thank you. ❤️
Hi friends,
I am personally connected with Ahmed from Gaza and am helping to fundraise for his GoFundMe campaign. Below is more information on our connection, his family and current situation, and why/how he is fundraising.
With thanks,
Dannielle
🌍 My connection to Ahmed
Ahmed Abu Jiwani is a young software developer from Gaza.
I met Ahmed in 2022 through , a professional development program for software developers in the Middle East and North Africa to help prepare them for global job opportunities. Ahmed was a participant, and I volunteered as a mentor. Ahmed and I worked together for several months on career readiness and interview prep. As his mentor, I was proud of his progress, and we have kept in touch as he advanced in his career as a software developer. 👨👨👧👧 Ahmed and his family
Ahmed, 25 years old, is responsible for helping take care of his family of 9:
Ahmed’s father passed away when he was 2 years of age.
The bombardment destroyed their homes, and they have been displaced 4 times in the last 10 months because of expanded military operations in civilian areas and "safe zones.” They now live in 2 tents in Khan Younis, and their safety is not guaranteed.
Ahmed's family reminds me of my own: his siblings are around my brother and I’s ages. My young cousins are around the age of his nephews. Ahmed is well-educated and has several years of experience in tech. His story could easily have been mine or yours if circumstances were different.
👇 Current challenges
The bombardment and occupation have left families like Ahmed's depleted physically, emotionally and financially.
Lack of shelter: Their family homes were bombed, leaving them unhoused and displaced. Sickness and disease: Ahmed and members of his family are sick with Hepatitis A due to unsafe drinking water in the refugee encampments. Survival supplies: Day-to-day essentials like clean water, food, and medicine are difficult to find due to the blockade, and prices have inflated 5-10x. Necessities are incredibly scarce in their current location in Khan Younis. Job loss and unemployment: Work is incredibly unstable under occupation, with Ahmed losing his job around November and his brother losing their job around January. Ahmed is determined to care for his family, and after 9 months of searching under intensely challenging conditions, I am pleased to share he secured a new job and is set to begin in early August. However, the market pay for a developer in Gaza is significantly below Canada or the US. It cannot solely support a large family experiencing ongoing displacement, medical issues, or forced famine, nor can it facilitate the possibility of evacuation. Job loss could occur at any time due to worsening conditions or emergencies. I often think about how challenging it would be to maintain work with a limited internet connection, little sustenance, and constantly moving around to avoid bombardment. ✋ How you can help
Ahmed and his family depend on their fundraising campaign for their everyday necessities of survival, and I hope to amplify their campaign within my community.
I am asking friends, family and collaborators to help with these calls to action:
Share the campaign with others (free!) Add reaction emojis to their campaign to increase their reach (free!) Hire Ahmed part- or full-time if you are looking for software development work Refer Ahmed to hiring managers recruiting software engineers (free!) I, Dannielle Sakher, and the professional organization we met through (Manara) have vetted Ahmed and his situation. I am the organizer of the GoFundMe campaign. I took over the collection of funds from Ahmed’s friend, who lives in Germany, and helped him raise the funds before me. That campaign is now closed. GoFundMe is only available in 20 countries.
If you have any questions, please let me know. I am in touch with Ahmed directly. I appreciate your support.
