We have been doing this RELAUNCH this month and I am so glad to see you all. The reason we did this for 2 reasons that I want you to honestly know. We did this because we moved things to Sunday night so that everyone can have a better chance to coming to RSM. We know you guys are busy, we want Sundays to be for RSM and for you all to be excited about making it too Sundays.
The other reason is because we wanted to give some flavor to our ministry. We wanted to bring a new purpose besides just being a place to hangout and hear about the Bible. We want this to be a place with purpose. We have 3 things that are our reason for all we do and they are things you will hear over and over again.
At Reality Student Ministry we
Find REAL belonging
Follow the REAL Jesus
Become REAL influence of change
Through that we want to see God start to make movement or Revival in the live of Teenagers in Lancaster county.
These things are what we stand on and give us purpose for why we meet. Obviously in that it means we are going to make memories, laugh a lot, and have fun. But we are also going to dive into what Jesus wants for our lives and let God change our lives.
We know Christianity can be weird and some us come to church because we have our entire lives or we are still not really sure about Jesus because we have questions or we just don’t know.
You have permission here to grow, ask questions, and even have you doubts. We talked a little bit about this last week with our REAL belonging value. We want you to feel that you can find genuine belonging and love here no matter who you are.
Tonight I want to talk about Following the Real Jesus. You may have heard about Jesus and think he's pretty amazing. Maybe you associate Jesus with people who vote Republican. Maybe you associate Jesus with being just another good person in history.
Tonight I want to share with you why Jesus is worth following with everything you have and that He might be different than you think. I want to challenge you who follow Jesus already to step even more into following Him and if you are not a Christian I want you to have an open mind about who Jesus is and why is He is worth following.
You don’t wan to follow someone that is going to lead you astray, bring you nothing, or take away from you ands leave you with nothing
You want to follow someone that will lead you to something real.
You want to follow someone that when you fall down or feel like quitting will run after you to find you and carry you.
You want to follow someone that when you mess up won’t hold that over your head for the rest of your life. Following a leader that won’t identify you with your mistakes. Or even a leader that won’t make fun of you for you mistakes.
See there is a guy named Peter that messed up constantly. I mean royalty messed up. Who struggling following through with what he said from his big mouth. When Jesus told everyone he was going to die Peter stood up and said not on my watch.
When Jesus asked Him to take watch while Jesus prayed the night before He was crucified and killed. Peter fell asleep.
Then when Jesus was found guilty by Rome and hung on a cross Peter denied Jesus 3 times.
But Jesus defeated death and rose from the grave to then
Following is not a loose term. In this sense of following Jesus the jewish people had this word called disciple. Which means student or follower. This was a day in and day out relationship. You followed your teacher or what they called Rabbi
We don’t do fake hear. I don’t want us to follow the genie God, the everyone is going to hell god, or even just the all love and no change in your life Jesus.
When you discover the real Jesus and you legitimately follow Him you don’t want to follow anyone else. You realize that He is the only one worth following.
In the feeding of the five thousand a story where Jesus feeds this large crowd in a miraculous way the crowds began to look for Jesus when He went away. Then when they found Him he made this bold claim.
This bold claim is who Jesus is and it freaked the crowds out and Jesus made these statements because He knew they were truth and He knew it would show who are His true followers
60On hearing it, many of his disciples said, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?”
61Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, “Does this offend you? 62Then what if you see the Son of Man ascend to where he was before! 63The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit[e] and life. 64Yet there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him. 65He went on to say, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them.”
66From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him.
67“You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve.
68Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. 69We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.”
Which brings me to my last point.
Who is Jesus? We don’t have the time, but here is Jesus in a nutshell.
Jesus is the Son of God. He is the center point of the Bible where everything and anything in the word of God is about Jesus.
Jesus is the king of the world. But He doesn't rule with a fist of fury, but with love and compassion for His people. He is a king that leads with grace.
How’s your way going?
Follow Jesus costs you everything, but you gain everything. Following Jesus might be embarrassing, might cost you friends, and it might cost you more.
But when you follow Jesus you are reborn. You become what the Bible says is “New creation”. In this new creation you get to have hope like never before, you can hand your sin and shame over to Jesus, and you will have freedom.
Not freedom to do whatever you want, but freedom to live
5 It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.
Slavery to your sin. You can have that freedom when you follow Jesus.
Are you going to answer the call? Are we going to answer the call to follow Jesus?
