Preventative and Curative Care
AI has the potential to improve healthcare access, outcomes and cost of care for previously underserved communities and disease areas relevant to India.
⭐️ AI can bridge the healthcare access gap in India.
India's vast geography and uneven distribution of healthcare resources create significant access challenges. With a population of over 1.4 billion, and a doctor-patient ratio of 1:1446 (ICMR), the country grapples with a severe shortage of healthcare resources. With over 700 million smartphone users, including 425 million in rural areas (WEF data), India has a vast user base that can benefit from smartphone-based AI applications to address the access gap:
Telemedicine powered by AI can bring expert medical care to remote areas, reducing the need for physical infrastructure. AI-based mobile solutions further scale this reach without incremental costs. Chatbots and virtual health assistants, for instance, can provide 24/7 basic health information and triage, reducing the burden on healthcare facilities.
Takeaways:
AI-powered tech solutions can democratise healthcare access in India by leveraging the country's high smartphone penetration. Early detection and diagnosis increases access to high-quality intervention earlier in the lifecycle of the health issue. ⭐️AI can help reduce healthcare operation costs.
In India, healthcare systems spend a significant portion of their budget on operational expenses.
Takeaways:
Using AI at various points in the value chain could reduce operational costs. This reduction in provider-related costs could result in lowering of healthcare expenses for patients. ⭐️ AI can drive inclusivity in Indian healthcare
India's diverse population presents unique challenges in delivering equitable healthcare. AI can promote inclusivity by:
Overcoming gender-specific barriers by providing secure, privacy compliant AI solutions where certain communities feel liberated to seek care. For example, women might be more willing to talk about women-specific issues to an AI gynaecologist rather than a male physician. [Source: Pinky Promise] Personalising treatment plans based on genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors specific to different Indian communities.[] AI-powered preventive approaches in mental health can be more cost-effective than curative care, providing pre- and post-therapy support, reducing practitioner burden, and enhancing the reach and efficiency of mental health services Takeaways:
Indian communities could be better represented in clinical data sets and solutions developed in the West. For delicate therapy areas that require confidentiality and trust-building, generative AI could help build empathetic and secure tools. ⭐️AI presents an opportunity for India to become a global leader in health-tech innovation

Accessibility
Accessibility always entails a cost. AI can help in reducing this cost and democratize accessibility in India.
Lay of the Land
In the following section, we have explained the disparities in the Disabilities area and tried to answer the following questions:
Which problems can AI help with ? How can AI help in these areas ? Disability areas
Neurodiverse disabilities Lack of accessibility in India
Daily commuting hassles, difficulty in accessing office buildings or educational institutions, toilets; difficulty in understanding and lack of accessibility in communication to engage effectively, or a lack of study materials in Braille and lack of captioned videos or lack of real-time captioning and interpretation services in classrooms, public establishments, and events – these are all reasons for people with disabilities opting out of opportunities that should be equally available to them.
They often constitute an invisible community in India, pushed to the sidelines due to a lack of understanding of accessibility needs across diverse spectrums within these communities.
⭐️ AI for early intervention in language learning and reasoning capability development
For building skills, learning by communicating with others, functioning in society and leading a healthy life language learning and reasoning capability should be developed from an early age. In Indian families, especially underprivileged families the language learning and reasoning capability development of kids with disabilities like deafness and neurodiverse disabilities is delayed.
Early speech therapy and interventions such as enabling them with Cochlear implants, and hearing devices as per their hearing loss spectrum can help deaf children speak. Rural India and tier 2-3 cities lacks speech therapy services compared to urban areas. AI-powered mobile tools like (for Romania) analyze children's pronunciation and recommend exercises to improve speech. Imagine the impact that Timlogo alternatives for Indian languages could have on disabled children in India ?
⭐️ AI for education and employability of disabled community
There are 78.64 lakh children with disabilities in India. The school dropout rate for children with disabilities is as high as 12 per cent. As many as 27 per cent have never been enrolled in any educational institution.
Why? Lack of accessible school buildings, lack of accessible learning materials, lack of training for faculties to learn how to teach and help disabled kids.
This talks about how AI systems like ChatGPT , Llama...etc could be used to generate custom learning contents for those with special needs and how these AIs can analyze student performance for tutors to plan out the special needs of students. These capabilities will reduce the cost for providing accessibility in education institutions and learning.
AI systems tailored for the Indian context will open doors of schools and universities to disabled students in all kinds of ways!
⭐️ AI for accessibility in livelihood issues
Buildings are not constructed in a disabled-friendly manner. For instance, there are instances where ramps are absent, and easily accessible toilets for the disabled are lacking. Navigating inside the building is generally challenging for blind individuals. Also Many public establishments such as airports, banks, railway stations and hospitals lack tools to assist the deaf and hard of hearing.
Major reasons why buildings and cities are not designed for disabled might be lack of awareness and the additional costs required to design them in a disabled friendly way.
and already help create or edit indoor layouts with prompts. What if Multi-modal LLMs like this fine-tuned for Indian context can automate designing accessibility-friendly building plans for India ?
⭐️ AI for accessibility in workplace
People with disabilities face significant challenges in accessing physical meetings and work tools. Physical meetings lack captions, and interfaces to communicate back making them inaccessible to deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals. Additionally, many software and tools used in the workplace are not accessible to people with various disabilities, including motor disabilities and blindness.
Copilots and code generation models are already helping disabled coders with motor disabilities, blindness,...etc to code. In a similar way AI can be used to make other tools accessible to the blind, deaf and people having motor disabilities across different job profiles, roles and environments.

Potential bottlenecks
Getting good datasets, especially in the Indian context, is the need of the hour to provide culturally relevant interventions in health and accessibility Computer vision (image and video related AI solutions) require higher volumes of data storage and might be costly. India's linguistic diversity poses a significant challenge in developing AI solutions that can effectively communicate across multiple languages and dialects. Gender disparity between men and women’s usage of smartphones (only 29% of women use smartphones compared to 71% of men (NSSO data)). Right now (unfortunately) people who are facing various disabilities and some of the organizations working on empowering them are the people who understand what all are the problems faced by people with disabilities in India. Accessibility products and capabilities that need only minimal processing power and that work without the internet is required.
Questions to further probe
How might the widespread adoption of AI in healthcare impact the role and training of human healthcare professionals in India, and what strategies should be employed to ensure a complementary rather than competitive relationship? [empowering AAA's - ASHA, Anganwadi, Auxiliary nurse and parents, caretakers of disabled persons] Are there certain disease areas and conditions which would particularly benefit from AI? For eg: what role can AI play in addressing the stigma associated with mental health in Indian society, particularly in promoting awareness and normalising help-seeking behaviors? In what ways can AI be leveraged to address India's unique public health challenges, such as managing infectious diseases outbreaks or improving maternal and child health outcomes in rural areas? How can AI technologies be utilized to support the mental health of specific vulnerable groups in India, such as farmers, migrant workers, or victims of domestic violence? What approaches can be developed to use AI in identifying and mitigating the mental health impacts of large-scale societal issues in India, such as climate change, economic instability, or social unrest. How much research startups, big companies and open source projects do before building accessibility features and products ?
