This tool kit is adapted from (Square) @jenniferemick’s original tool kit, combined with our unique needs for our product experience team. It is not a prescribed task list, but ideally used as a template. Each person can add, and remove sections. Make it UNIQUE for individual’s need. As always, it is an experiment! We iterate.

Before you dig into the 1:1 template a few things
1- This 1:1 template is very heavy and structured. I would suggest to edit it down to something more manageable. I decided to keep most of the original items from Jennifer, so that you can pick what you need
2- It is important to carve out time to focus on people development. if not carve out time, the 1:1s will be taken over by just work syncs. However, check with each person, sometimes they prefer just talking about “work”. So it is up the manager to creatively insert “development” topics into these work jam-packed sessions. (Trust me it is important, and very artifule to do so)
3- Remember what Kim Scott’s book radical candor? Don’t forget “Care personally, challenge directly.” Challenging comes from different forms.
Make space for conversation.
Have you ever gone into a 1-on-1 wanting to have a conversation about career goals or peer feedback, and then not really knowing where to point to?
The is a mission control for managing the teams; it’s where we define actionable goals that are tied to specific sections of the career ladder, track progress towards each goal, set 1:1 agendas so that time is well-spent and focused on clear objectives, and capture kudos—all in one place. Before, notes and proof points were everywhere: individual development plans lived in Google Sheets, Figma files, Wiki pages, and spreadsheets. Integrating all these pieces provides a more accurate picture of where an individual is, where they want to go, and how best to support them in getting there. By having a dedicated development section in this doc, we have created space and structure to prioritize career growth—conversations that we all know are important but can easily slip by the wayside as things get busy.

The rest of the doc is fairly straightforward. Here’s an outline of the different parts of the doc:
