Tiered Development Process

This type of project is utilized when a course needs to go live for students sooner than a standard development would allow. It keeps the timeline of the course development the same length but reorders the steps so that the debut occurs earlier in the process.
Tiered developments allow the Online Education team to keep students on track for degree completion during the simultaneous development of new program courses. The course debuts mid-way through the project once the course map, syllabus, rubrics, and test banks are complete. Lectures are drafted on a weekly basis and delivered by the developer/instructor to the students (via the D2L Brightspace Announcements) each week. These lectures must be simultaneously provided to the instructional designer, who will integrate the material into the master course for subsequent runs. During this process, the developer will potentially teach the course at low enrollment with an additional low enrollment stipend on top of the per-student rates indicated in the teaching contract.

Lecture Content

Lectures for tiered courses follow the same expectations as listed below with regard to silver, gold, and platinum levels.
Lecture content for each week should include a total of 500 – 750 words (comprising of the topics listed in the course map).
The content must add value to the course beyond what is provided in the textbook.
Developer/instructor may pull in examples from the field, apply content to current events, or bring in additional source material.
The developer/instructor should not simply provide an abstract of what students will read in the chapters.
The developer/instructor may link to curated multimedia content from YouTube or other sources if applicable, as noted on the course map.

MGMT 211 Tiered Development Sample

MGMT 211 was taught live in 23SUMR1. Each Monday, the instructor would release an announcement with the lecture materials.

Note that at the start of the 23SUMR1 debut, each week had a “Weekly Activities” file that explained the objectives, learning resources, and activities. You can download this file and use it in your tiered build.
