Conditional Release

To encourage consistency and appropriate use of Conditional Releases, follow these best practices:

Setting up Conditional Releases

Use the conditionalRelease.html file as a template for the conditionally released Assignment Page.
Create a new file each time, do not copy text or links from another course.
The Assignment Page should identify the assignment that needs to be submitted, and all of the Conditional Releases attached to that assignment (pages to view, other assignments to complete, minimum scores to achieve, etc).
Provide a quicklink to the item(s) that must be completed for the Conditional Release.
Place the assignment page above the quick-link to the assignment.
Give the assignment page the same due date as the assignment, and apply release conditions on the page in the following way: (see Conditional Release Logic below for more help)
For any release condition the assignment has, the opposite must be put on the assignment page. For example, if the assignment requires “view a content page”, the assignment page would need a release condition of “has not viewed content page”
If the release requires a minimum score, then the assignment page will need two release conditions, one for not taking the quiz, and one for not receiving a high enough score.
If multiple releases are needed on the assignment page, then set the release conditions to “Any Condition must be met.” This option is in the dropdown below the “Create” and “Browse” buttons in the release conditions settings.
Examples of the Assignment Page in action can be found in Week 1 of NURS 212, 311, and 313.

Conditional Release Logic Example

The logic behind setting up Conditional Releases can be confusing. The most common area with conditional releases are Dropboxes. Ensuring the appropriate conditions are in place is important, and help eliminate any interruption to students’ learning. Because of this, the following logic is used:
The conditional release settings for the assignment page should be contingent on completing ANY of the requirements. For example, if a student must earn 70% on a History Writing Quiz before they can access the Dropbox to submit their first paper. The release conditions should be set as follows.
Dropbox assignment conditional release
“Receives greater than or equal to 70 % on the quiz: History Writing Quiz”
Assignment page conditional release set so that any of these conditions must be met.
“Receives less than 70 % on the quiz: History Writing Quiz”
“Has not completed an attempt on the quiz: History Writing Quiz
Note that the scoring criterion for the assignment page should be less than 70%. A score equal to 70% is sufficient to release the assignment, so remove the “equal to” part of the condition.
