Summary:
Painting an accurate picture of your health and habits to your healthcare providers is very difficult. You may not know or even remember all the details. You may not know how to explain what’s wrong. You may be communicating on behalf of someone else. Surely there must be a better way!
Take part in the Digital Health mini-hackathon to help find solutions to accurately track and convey your health and habits to healthcare providers. Teams have 45 minutes to consider available data and approaches, sketch out new designs and collaborate relentlessly on creative solutions for capturing and communicating health. Submissions are assessed by a panel of esteemed mentors and experts from leading agencies, who can also provide guidance and inspiration. More details will be provided at the event!
Introduction:
When you go to the doctor's office they ask you questions about your health and habits. How is your sleep? Tell me about your diet? When did you first start noticing symptoms? How bad is the pain? How long has this been going on? The problem is that as humans, we can't remember the details and without details doctor's can't make a proper diagnosis or treatment plan.
Too often this results in doctors recommending that we "Keep an eye on it for 3-6 months and revisit it then". This causes delays in diagnosis, delays in treatment, stress to the patient, repeat doctor visits, and more cost to the health care system. And for people who see a variety of doctors and specialists, they have to do this with each and every healthcare provider.
Patients and parents of sick kids need comprehensive and accurate ways to communicate their health to their doctor and today’s technology ecosystem should be able to help.
The challenge: Design a system that uses wearable technology AND user input to capture the daily notes/data/events/symptoms/etc that would be required to properly inform both the patient and the doctor on what is happening with the patient’s health.
As part of the CCC Mini-Hackathon, we have a shared mission: Find solutions to capture and communicate patient health to healthcare providers.
For the next 45 minutes, you will collaborate relentlessly, brainstorming and sketching creative solutions digital health tracking and communication.
Mentors and experts from leading agencies are there to provide guidance and inspiration, ensuring the projects are practical and effective.
If your idea is selected as the winner, we will need a team member to deliver an awe-inspiring 5-minute presentation to inspire the audience about digital health.
Some approaches and questions to get you started:
Wearables and Home Medical Devices: Today’s available wearables gather all sorts of great information but it simply isn’t enough to paint a real picture of our health. We have connected home medical devices (blood pressure monitors, CPAP machines, blood sugar monitors, etc) at our disposal but they aren’t yet part of the connected ecosystem and are only available to people AFTER they become ill. Finding ways to connect these devices and unify their data could contribute to a more comprehensive health picture. Communication Tools for Children: Kids don’t know how to tell you what’s wrong and they usually don’t have wearables. But kids are great at playing with toys, singing songs, drawing, colouring, pointing, and more. Providing kids with ways to communicate that doesn’t rely on verbal communication could make it easier for them to tell you what’s wrong. Mobile Apps: Adults have mobile devices and apps on them all the time. Making it simple for adults to track their daily health and habits via an app could provide an effective platform, but how do you motivate someone to want to click buttons every day? Health Ecosystems: The big tech companies all have health data ecosystems including fitness trackers, apps, APIs, and tech platforms. How can these be leveraged? Digital Assistants: Alexa can help me turn on the lights but could it do more? What role do Alexa, Siri, and Google Assistant play in my health? Prescription for Digital Health: As a government run health system the Canadian provincial health authorities can provide and prescribe digital solutions. What role does the government play in digitizing our daily health routines? Your Health Records: You’ve been seeing a doctor for a while, likely since you were born. There is a history there that could shed light on how you’re feeling today. How does a doctor come up to speed on your entire health history? Artificial Intelligence: With the billions of health records that exist today, how can AI help figure out what’s happening with your health?
