About the role
We are looking for a Director of Data Science to lead teams that partner with our Core, Merchandising group to help our merchants have access to best in class capabilities to run and grow their business.
About the team
Merchandising is at the heart of what differentiates our merchants’ businesses, and the product they sell is usually where their passion lies. This is the team responsible for helping merchants represent that product in their store and across channels, define and run their pricing strategy, and ultimately drive more sales. This is also the team responsible for Product Recommendation and Search in the Online Store and the Shop App, including the data-intensive relevance work needed to help merchants sell more products.
Scope of Opportunity
Define the data strategy for Merchandising and use data to help set the product strategy overall, with a deep focus on Search in particular
Build the data foundations that will support understanding and data products in this domain for years to come
Deeply understand the biggest opportunities in Search and Discovery and drive the relevance work to bring GMV wins for merchants
Set the vision for how data can help merchants set more effective pricing and merchandising strategies

Data Science & Engineering is a crucial part of Shopify’s mission to make commerce better for everyone. We organize and interpret petabytes of data to provide solutions for our merchants and stakeholders across the organization. The Data Science & Engineering team acts as the impact multiplier for Shopify’s product teams, putting over 11 petabytes of data to work to make our merchants more successful.
A huge part of the reason Shopify has been this successful is because of our developer platform. We’re kicking off an even more radical shift as a company to a platform-first mindset

Production Engineering includes scaling Shopify’s infrastructure, streaming platform, search platform, app platform, compliance platform
Potential for an Expanded Role
If you are ready (this isn’t a requirement of the role) you could also be responsible for our nascent production engineering data science team which is responsible for capacity forecasting, traffic analysis, and more.
No data leadership role will have more influence on the thousands of engineers across all of Shopify and the tens of thousands who build on our external APIs

The Revenue org is a rapidly growing area within Shopify that plays a vital role in delivering on this vision by reaching entrepreneurs around the world and helping them succeed on Shopify. It operates on a global scale, helping and empowering merchants in over 175+ countries and building data-informed strategies and products that enable our merchants to come, stay and grow on Shopify.
Working across regional GTM teams, you and your team will tackle challenging marketing and revenue related problems like cross-domain tracking, multi-touch attribution, media mix model and incrementality testing. We build strong data foundations, anomaly detection tools, and reporting frameworks to empower the revenue organization to make great decisions quickly.

Data Experience at scale -- You’ve been a leader in multiple tech companies where analytics on top of massive data sets drives product/business decisions and results in powerful data products. You have a strong background in machine learning including experience implementing models and productionizing innovative end-to-end machine learning systems.
