UbD - How can I view planning insights data for my curriculum?

Planning insights on Toddle help you understand how units, standards, and learning goals are planned across grades, courses, and subjects. These insights make it easy to identify gaps and ensure every student experiences a well-planned curriculum.

Navigate to Planning insights

To access planning insights:
Navigate to your school homepage and select Planning insights.

On the Planning Insights landing page, you will see the following sections in the left pane:
1. School insights: Provides a school-wide
An overview of how Skills and any custom datasets (enabled for Planning Insights) are planned across all grades.
2. Department insights: View insights for each department, including:
All units planned across grade levels
Standards coverage across units and tasks
Coverage of Skills and any custom datasets across grades
3. Subject insights (available only if your school uses a subject-based setup) – Provides insights across all grades for each subject, including:
All units planned for the subject across grade levels
Standards coverage across units and class tasks
Skills mapping across units and class tasks
Any custom datasets tracked by your school across units and class tasks
4. Grade insights – Insights across all subjects for each grade level, including:
All units planned across subjects for the grade
Standards coverage across units and class tasks
Skills mapping across units and class tasks
Any custom datasets tracked by your school across units and class tasks
5. View by course – Insights for each course, which includes details on:
All units within the course
Standards coverage across units and class tasks
Skills mapping across units and class tasks
Any custom datasets tracked by your school across units and class tasks
6. Class insights: View insights for each class, including:
All units with associated planning elements
Standards coverage across units and tasks
Skills and any custom datasets covered in the class
Timeline of units across the academic calendar
7. Student level insights: View the planned curriculum for each student based on their enrolled classes, including:
All units the student is engaged in, with associated planning elements
Standards coverage based on units being taught to the student
Coverage of Skills and any custom datasets
Timeline of units across the academic calendar
Note: View by student is available to school administrators only.

School insights

The School insights page gives you a snapshot of how Skills and any other learning goals defined by your school are addressed across grades.

Skills insights

This table shows how every skill and sub-skill tracked by your school is addressed across grades.
All skills and sub-skills appear as individual rows.
Each grade appears as a column in the table.
The numbers in each cell indicate how many units or courses address each skill in a specific grade.
The Total units/Total courses column shows the total number of unique units/courses across all grades where the skill was addressed.
Switch to the Task count tab to view the number of tasks that address each skill in a specific grade. In the Task count view, the Total units/Total courses column is replaced by the Total tasks column. Tasks include formative assessments, summative assessments, learning experiences, and AI tutors linked to your units.
At the top of the page, you can:
Search for a skill using the search bar.
Switch between Unit count and Course count to view the covered units or courses.
Configure columns to show/hide grades and reorder them in the table.

Click any number in the table to open a pop-up which:
Lists all units or courses where the skill was addressed, along with linked learning experiences and assessments, and quick navigation to each.
Or, use the exclude icon to exclude a unit/course from the insights view.

SDGs - Custom datasets

If your school uses custom datasets - such as Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs), or learners’ portraits - created in planners and enabled for Planning Insights, these appear alongside Skills in the ‘ School insights section. You can easily switch to the custom dataset from the dropdown without returning to the main Planning insights screen.
This view works the same way as Skills:
Each dataset item appears in a row, with grades shown as columns.
The numbers indicate how many units/courses in each grade addressed that dataset item. When clicked, the unit/course names are displayed in a pop-up along with the linked learning experiences and assessments that address that dataset item.
The Total units/Total courses column shows the total number of unique units/courses across all grades where the dataset item was addressed.
Note: The custom dataset used for this article is ‘Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs)’, and will be referred to as ‘SDGs’ throughout the article.

Department insights

View by department lets you analyze how each department addresses curriculum elements across all grade levels. The landing page displays all departments as cards. Click any department card to view its insights.

When you open a department, the following tabs are available: Unit, Standards, and Skills. If your school has enabled custom datasets, these appear as additional tabs alongside the default tabs.

Unit view

The Unit tab shows all units planned for the selected department across grade levels. The left panel lists all grades, and under each grade, all classes associated with the department. The main table displays one row per unit with columns for unit information, including any custom fields your school has added.
Use the following controls:
Use the search bar to find a unit by keywords.
Use Filters to narrow down by grade.
Use Sort to sort classes and units alphabetically, by created date, or by last modified date. You can also choose to apply your sorting preference across all unit insight views.
Use Configure columns to show or hide and reorder unit information.
Click any unit title to open it in a new browser tab.
Note: To explore insights for other departments, use the dropdown next to the department title to switch departments.

Standards view

The Standards tab provides visibility into how learning standards are addressed across grades within the selected department. Rows represent individual standards, which can be expanded to view sub-standards. If your school has multiple standard sets associated with the department, you can switch between them using the panel on the left. For each standard or sub-standard, you can track:

Use the search bar and Configure columns to manage the view.

Skills view

The Skills tab shows how skills are addressed across grade levels within the selected department.
Skills appear as rows; grades appear as columns
Use the toggle to switch between Course count, Unit count, and Task count views. The total column on the right updates to show Total courses, Total units, or Total tasks accordingly.
Use the search bar to find a specific skill
Click any number to open a pop-up listing all associated units or courses
Insights are displayed in the same manner for other curriculum elements such as custom datasets enabled. However, only the course/unit count is available for custom datasets.

Subject insights

The View by subject section shows how units, standards, and skills are planned and taught across grades for each subject. The landing page displays all subjects added to your school, with the number of courses associated with each. Click a subject card to view its insights.
Inside, you will see multiple tabs at the top: Unit, Standards, Skills and SDGs (custom dataset). Each tab gives you a different view of how the subject is planned across grades.
Note: View by subject section is available only for schools using a subject-based setup.

Unit view

The Unit view displays all units planned for the selected subject across grade levels.
The left panel lists all grades, and under each grade, you will see all its courses associated with the selected subject.
The main table displays one row per unit, with all its planning elements.
Note: All fields inside a unit planner are included in the insights, including any custom fields added by the school.
At the top of the page, you can:
Switch subjects using the subject dropdown.
Search for a unit using keywords.
Apply a filter to view data of specific grades.
Sort classes and units alphabetically, by created date, or by last modified date. You can also choose to apply your sorting preference across all unit insight views
Configure columns to show/hide and reorder specific unit information, such as standards, skills, transfer goals, assessments, and any custom fields added to your unit plan template.
Clicking a unit title opens the unit in a new browser tab.

Standards view

The Standards view provides visibility into how subject-specific standards are addressed across grades through courses, units, and class tasks.
Rows represent individual subject standards.
For each standard/sub-standard, you can track:
Associated courses: The number of courses that address the standard. Clicking the count opens a pop-up displaying course names along with linked learning experiences and assessments.
Associated units: The number of units aligned to the standard. Clicking reveals a list of units along with their associated learning experiences and assessments.
Tasks planned The count of draft assessments aligned to the standard that are not yet assigned to students.
Tasks Taught: The count of assessments aligned to the standard that have been assigned to students.
Note: The standards shown here are the ones configured for the selected subject via the admin portal. Check to learn more.

Skills view

The Skills view shows how skills are addressed in the selected subject across grades.
All skills configured for your school appear in rows, with grades shown as columns.
The Total units/Total courses column shows the total number of unique units/courses across all grades where the skill was addressed.
Switch to the Task count tab to view the number of tasks that address each skill in a specific grade. In the Task count view, the Total units/Total courses column is replaced by the Total tasks column. Tasks include formative assessments, summative assessments, learning experiences, and AI tutors linked to your units.
Click any number in the table to open a pop-up showing the list of units/courses where that skill was addressed for that grade. You can navigate directly to the unit/course page from there, or use the exclude icon to remove that unit/course from the insights view.
Insights are displayed in the same manner for other curriculum elements such as custom datasets enabled. However, only the course/unit count is available for custom datasets.

Grade insights

The View by grade section organises insights by grade level, helping you review the coverage of planning elements across subjects for a given grade. The landing page displays all grade levels in your school with the number of courses associated with each. Click any grade card to view detailed insights.
Inside, you will see multiple tabs at the top: Unit, Standards, Skills, and SDGs (custom dataset).

Unit view

The Unit view shows all units planned across subjects for the selected grade.
The left panel lists all subjects and the course names within the subjects, in the selected grade.
Units appear in rows under each subject, with columns showing unit information.
Note: All fields inside a unit planner are included in the insights, including any custom fields added by the school.
Clicking a unit title opens the unit in a new page, allowing you to review its full details.
Use the search bar to find a unit by name or switch the grade using the drop-down menu.
Apply filters by Subject and Department, and you can refine results using operators like is/are or is/are not. Selecting a Department narrows the list of Subjects.
Sort classes and units alphabetically, by created date, or by last modified date. You can also choose to apply your sorting preference across all unit insight views
Configure columns to show or hide specific unit information in the table, such as standards, skills, transfer goals, or assessments, including any custom fields added to your unit plan template.

You can choose to view data subject wise or department wise, switch between the views using the View by dropdown.
Click any number in the table to open a pop-up showing the list of units/courses where that skill was addressed for that grade. You can navigate directly to the unit/course page from there, or use the exclude icon to remove that unit/course from the insights view.

Course insights

The View by course section shows a complete list of all courses in the school, along with the subjects and classes linked to each course. You can also filter the list of courses as per the subject, grade or status (archived or active).

Clicking a course name opens the detailed course-level insights, organized into the following tabs:

Unit view

The Unit view displays all units planned within the selected course.
Each unit appears as a separate row, with columns for unit information.
Note: All fields inside a unit planner are included in the insights, including any custom fields added by the school.
At the top of the page, you can:
Search for a unit by name using the search bar.
Configure columns to show or hide specific planning elements depending on what your school has enabled.
Sort classes and units alphabetically, by created date, or by last modified date. You can also apply your sorting preference to all unit insight views.
Switch between courses using the drop-down.
Clicking a unit title opens the full unit, allowing you to review its complete planning details.
