Let’s learn about these insights in detail.
School insights
School insights gives teachers and admins an institution-wide view of curriculum coverage across all grades and transdisciplinary themes. Use the dropdown next to the section title to navigate between school-level insights: Programme of Inquiry, Approaches to Learning, Theme descriptors, Key concepts, Learner profile attributes, Subjects, and Custom datasets.
Programme of Inquiry
The Programme of Inquiry (PoI) matrix displays your entire school’s PoI in a single interactive view.
Rows represent grade levels Columns represent the 6 transdisciplinary themes Each cell shows the units planned for that grade and theme combination, with duration displayed in weeks Click any cell to expand it and view the unit’s central idea, key concepts and related concepts, lines of inquiry, and learner profile attributes. Click the unit title to open the full unit planner in a new tab.
Note: Duration is displayed in weeks and reflects the planned length set in the unit planner.
To explore other school-level insights (e.g., Approaches to Learning, Specified concepts, Subjects), use the dropdown menu next to the section title.
Approaches to Learning (ATL)
The ATL section gives you 2 ways to view skills distribution across your curriculum, accessible via the tabs at the top of the section.
Overview by grade: shows how ATL skills are distributed across year levels:
Rows represent ATL skills and skill clusters Columns represent grade levels Each cell shows how many units address that ATL skill in that grade The Total units column shows the total number of unique units across all grades where the skill was addressed Overview by theme: shows how ATL skills are integrated within each transdisciplinary theme:
Rows represent ATL skills and skill clusters Columns represent the 6 transdisciplinary themes Each cell shows how many units under that theme address the ATL skill The Total units column shows the total number of unique units across all themes where the skill was addressed Use the following controls at the top of the page:
Use the Course count or Task count tabs to switch what the table displays. The task count is only available in the overview by grade. Tasks include learning experiences and AI tutors linked to the ATLs. Use the search bar to find a specific ATL skill. Use Configure columns to show or hide grades and the total count column. Click any number in the table to open a pop-up listing all courses, units or tasks where the ATL skill was addressed. Click any item to navigate directly to the course, unit planner, or task.
Key concepts and Learner profile attributes follow the same structure as ATL skills: overview by grade and overview by theme, with a course count, unit count, and (in the overview by grade) task count. Click any count to view the contributing courses, units, or tasks.
Theme descriptors
The Theme descriptors section shows the coverage of IB-defined transdisciplinary theme descriptors across grades.
Rows represent theme descriptors, grouped by transdisciplinary theme Columns represent grade levels A green checkmark indicates the descriptor has been addressed in that grade; a grey icon indicates it has not been covered The total count column shows the number of unique courses or units across all grades where the descriptor has been addressed. Click any number to see the associated courses or units. Use the Course count or Unit count tabs to switch what the total column displays. Use the search bar to find a specific descriptor. Use Configure columns to show or hide grades and the total count. Subjects
The Subjects section shows how courses and units are distributed across your subjects. Use the tabs at the top to switch between the overview by grade (columns represent grade levels) and the overview by theme (columns represent the 6 transdisciplinary themes).
Columns represent grade levels or transdisciplinary themes, depending on the selected view Each cell shows how many courses or units are planned for that subject in that grade or theme Use the Course count or Unit count tabs to switch what the table displays. Use the search bar to find a specific subject. Use Configure columns to show or hide columns. Click any count to view the contributing courses or units.
Note: If your school uses custom datasets, for example, UN SDGs or school values, these appear in the dropdown and follow the same view as Key concepts and Learner profile attributes. Custom datasets show unit coverage only; task counts are not available. Custom datasets must be enabled by a school administrator and included for planning insight calculations.
View by department
View by department lets coordinators and department heads review how a specific subject group addresses curriculum elements across all grades. The landing page displays all departments as cards with the number of classes in each. Click any department card to view its insights.
Note: In the department view, units and elements are not grouped by subject. ATLs are shown across all subjects without subject-level breakdown, and standards reflect all standards from the department’s courses without course-level mapping.
The tabs available at the top of the department view are:
Approaches to Learning (ATL) Learner profile attributes Unit
The Unit tab shows all units planned for the selected department across grade levels. The left panel lists all grades, and under each grade, all classes associated with the department. The main table displays one row per unit with columns for unit title, transdisciplinary theme, central idea, learner profile attributes, and specified concepts.
Note: All fields inside a unit planner are included in the insights, including any custom fields added by the school.
Use the following controls:
Use the search bar to find a unit by keywords. Use Filters to narrow down by grade. Use Sort to sort classes and units alphabetically, by created date, or by last modified date. You can also choose to apply your sorting preference across all unit insight views. Use Configure columns to show or hide and reorder specific unit information. Click any unit title to open it in a new browser tab.
Note: To explore insights for other departments, use the dropdown next to the department title to switch departments.
Standards
The Standards tab provides visibility into how subject-specific standards are addressed across grades within the selected department. The left panel lists all standard sets from the subjects tagged to that department. You can switch between standard sets to view their corresponding standards and coverage.
Rows represent individual standards, which can be expanded to view sub-standards. For each standard or sub-standard, you can track:
Associated courses: the number of courses that address the standard Associated units: the number of units aligned to the standard Tasks planned: the count of draft assessments not yet assigned to students Tasks taught: the count of assessments assigned to students Use the search bar and Configure columns to manage the view.
Approaches to Learning (ATL)
The ATL tab shows the distribution of ATL skills across grades in the selected department.
ATL skills appear as rows; grades appear as columns The numbers in each cell indicate how many units addressed each ATL skill in that grade The total count column shows the aggregate across all grades, and updates when you switch tabs Use the following controls:
Use the Course count or Task count tabs to switch what the table displays. Use Filters to narrow by subject within the department. Use the search bar to find a specific ATL skill. Use Configure columns to show or hide grades and the total count. Click any number to open a pop-up showing associated units or tasks.
Key concepts and Learner profile attributes are tracked in the same way as ATL skills: each shows a course count, unit count, or task count across grades. Use Filters to narrow by subject. Click any count to view the contributing courses, units, or tasks.
Note: Custom datasets follow the same structure as the ATL tab but show a course count and unit count only. Task counts are not available. Use Filters to narrow by subject.
View by subject
View by subject lets subject specialists and coordinators analyze planning vertically, tracking how a specific subject addresses curriculum elements across all grade levels. Use the filters at the top of the page to narrow subject cards by grade, status, or department.
