Toddle enables you to set up grading systems that align with your school’s assessment policies and reporting needs. You can use two approaches: score-based grading, where student work is assessed using numeric or letter grades, and standards-based grading, where performance is measured against specific learning objectives or achievement standards.
In this article, we’ll walk you through how to set up and manage score-based grading in Toddle.
Set up score-based grading
To begin, go to Admin portal → School → Grading setup
On the landing page, you’ll find a dedicated section titled ‘Score based grading’ in the left menu. This section contains two sub-pages:
Grading categories- where you can define the types of assessments your school uses (e.g., classwork, tests, projects). Score calculation- where you can configure how final scores are calculated based on the defined categories. Grading categories
Grading categories let you group different types of assessments - like classwork or projects - and assign weightings based on their importance. This helps standardize how scores are calculated across courses.
Click on the ‘Create categories’ button to begin creating grading categories.
Simply enter the required category names in the table. Click on ‘Add new’ to add additional rows as needed. To remove a category, click on the bin icon next to it.
Once satisfied, click ‘Save’ to apply your changes. These categories will now be available for use when setting up category sets, as will be explored later. Note that you cannot delete a category once it is being used in a category set.
Score calculation
Once your grading categories are in place, you can proceed to set up how student scores are calculated under the ‘Score calculation’ tab. These settings are configured at the school level and automatically applied to all courses. When a new course is added, the system will automatically copy the school's default to it. You can always edit these settings at the course level if needed using the ‘Course wise configurations’ tab.
Under the ‘School default’ tab, you can:
Choose whether to calculate category scores. If enabled, decide whether category scores contribute to grading period scores as weighted or unweighted. Set whether the same categories and weights apply across all grading periods or vary by term. Configure how the grading period score is calculated and how it's displayed. If using cumulative grading periods, choose whether to calculate cumulative scores from assignments or grading period scores and decide the display settings. Let’s understand this in detail in the following sections.
Categories
In this section, you can define the assessment categories your school will use and configure how these categories contribute to the grading period score. Start by using the toggle at the top to choose whether or not to calculate category scores.
If category scores are disabled- all assignments will directly contribute to the grading period score, without being grouped into categories. If category scores are enabled- You will see a table where you can create and configure categories for each grading period. If you choose to calculate category scores, the next step is to select how these category scores contribute to the grading period score:
Weighted categories: In this case, you will assign weights to each category (e.g., Homework – 30%, Quizzes – 40%), which will determine their contribution to the final grading period score. Unweighted categories: All selected categories will contribute equally to the grading period score - no weights are assigned. Add and manage categories
Next, use the table to define and manage your categories. You can:
Select a category from the set of pre-defined set of categories in the drop-down Add a weight for each category if weighted categories are enabled (the % will calculate automatically) Use the ‘Add new’ button to add a new category row to the table Use the bin icon to remove a category If you want each category score to convert into a grade (e.g., A–F, Proficient), enable the ‘Calculate a category grade’ toggle. You can then assign a grade scale using the Grade scale (optional) column in the table. Click the pencil icon to choose the relevant grade scale from the ones defined for your school. Each category can use a different grade scale if required. Note: Only regular grade scales can be used for category grade scales.
Use the actions menu (⋮) to manage the grade scale linked to a category. From here, you can: Change the selected grade scale Copy the grade scale to other categories Override grade scale values- Selecting Override grade scale values opens a modal where you can adjust the cutoff percentages for that grade scale for this specific category. If you want to undo these overrides, use the ‘Reset to default’ option. This restores all cutoff values to the original grade scale. Note- These overrides do not modify the original school-level grade scale; they apply only to this category.
If the cutoffs have been overridden, a colored triangle indicator and a tooltip appear inside the Grade scale cell to indicate the same. If you copy a grade scale to other categories or grading periods, any overrides you make after copying will not carry over. If you want all categories to use the same overridden values, adjust them first and then use the copy option. Additionally, you can decide whether to use the same set of categories (and weights, if applicable) across all grading periods, or define them separately for each grading period, using the toggle labelled ‘Define different categories for each grading period’.
Reporting period calculation
In this section, you’ll configure how final scores for grading period are calculated - either directly from assignments or category scores, depending on the setting done in the section above.
There are two possible cases:
If category scores are disabled, the grading period score is calculated directly from assignments. You can choose how assignment scores contribute - whether each assignment is treated equally, proportionally to its maximum score, or assigned custom weights. If category scores are enabled, assignment scores are first used to calculate category scores, and the grading period score is then calculated based on those category scores and their assigned weights (if using weighted categories). When calculating either category or grading period scores from assignments, you can choose the assignment weight options by clicking the pencil icon next to ‘Assignment weights’.
A pop-up window will appear, displaying three calculation methods:
Average: All assignments are treated with equal weightage, and their scores are averaged to calculate the total. Weights proportional to maximum score: Assignments are weighted based on their maximum scores -higher-value assessments carry more weight in the final calculation. Weighted average: Assignments can be assigned custom weights, independent of their maximum score. The assessment weights are then applied to each assessment to arrive at the overall score. Once you have selected your preferred method, click ‘Save’ to apply the changes.
Next, use the ‘Display setting’ dropdown to choose whether the scores will reflect as absolute weights or percentages in the gradebook and progress reports.
💡If you have selected the unweighted categories option, then the ‘Weight’ option will be disabled as the scores can only reflect as percentages.
Next, use ‘Decimal settings’ to configure how the overall scores are formatted and displayed.
You can choose between whole numbers, 1 decimal place, or 2 decimal places. Additionally, you can decide whether scores should be rounded or truncated. These settings give you precise control over how final scores appear in gradebooks and reports. Once satisfied, click ‘Save’ to apply your changes.
💡Changes made to these settings may slightly affect the final score calculations in unlocked gradebooks and progress reports.
Cumulative period calculation
This section is applicable only if your school has defined cumulative grading periods (e.g. Semester 1 made up of Term 1 and Term 2).
When cumulative periods are set up, you can choose how the cumulative score should be calculated:
Based on weighted grading period scores: The score is calculated using the final scores from each grading period included in the cumulative period. Each grading period can carry a specific weight (e.g. Term 1 – 40%, Term 2 – 60%). The final cumulative score is then computed based on these weights. Based on assignments: The score is calculated directly from all assignments across the grading periods that make up the cumulative period. The calculation method will be the same as that for grading period score calculation.
Finally, you can configure the relative weightage of each grading period (e.g., Term 1, and Term 2) that contributes to the overall cumulative score. Note that this table appears only if you have selected the ‘Weighted grading periods’ option previously.
Simply enter the desired numerical weights, and the system will automatically calculate and display the corresponding percentages. These percentages determine how much each grading period will impact the cumulative score calculation.
This score-based grading setup ensures consistent calculation of student scores across the school, while also allowing teachers to modify these settings at the course level as needed.
