A blueprint course lets you create a master course template and connect it to multiple teacher courses, so you only build once and sync everywhere. Any changes you make to the assignments, content, or settings of a blueprint course can be pushed to linked teacher courses, helping your school keep curriculum aligned, reduce repetitive work, and maintain consistency across classes.
In this article, we will cover the following:
Navigate to Blueprint courses Create a Blueprint course Link Teacher courses and sync content How updates appear in teacher courses Frequently asked questions (FAQs) Navigate to Blueprint courses
As an administrator, you can access blueprint courses from:
Admin portal → [School] → Course and class management → Blueprint courses
Create Blueprint courses
Set up a blueprint course individually
On this page, you can create a course by clicking on ‘Create new course’.
Follow these steps to set up a new blueprint course:
1. Add basic details
Select the subject(s) and grade level(s). Choose the grading period(s) → either All year or select specific grading periods. Assign a department to help organize courses (optional). Add a course code for easy identification in reports and linked courses. Click the gear icon to create a new code if needed.
2. Add staff members
Click ‘Add course staff’.
In the pop-up, select staff and assign roles: Course editor: Full access to the blueprint course and all modules of the associated teacher courses and their classes. Course viewer: Read-only access to the blueprint course.
3. Finalize your course setup
Your course will now appear in the Blueprint Courses list. From here, you can begin adding content to it, just like you would in a regular teacher course. Set up blueprint courses in bulk
In addition to creating courses individually, you can also bulk add and update blueprint courses using the spreadsheet template option. This is especially useful when setting up multiple courses at once.
To do this:
Click the bulk upload icon at the top of the ‘Blueprint courses’ page. Choose to either download a template with your existing courses pre-filled or start with a blank template. Add or edit course details Open the template in Excel or Google Sheets and fill in the required fields. Follow the instructions in the sheet carefully to avoid errors. Upload the filled template Once populated, upload the completed .xlsx file by clicking ‘Attach file’. The system will then process your entries and update or create the corresponding blueprint courses. Tip: Use Excel or Google Sheets to fill the template, as these formats are most compatible with the upload process.
Add content to a blueprint course
Once you open a blueprint course, you will see two main sections in the left panel to add content and import standards to the blueprint course:
1. Course plan: Use this section to organize your curriculum with a clear sequence of units, lessons, assessments, and resources. The steps are the same as . Content added here can be synced with the linked teacher courses.
2. Standards: Displays all the standard sets, as configured from within the admin portal.
Course-based setup → You’ll see all standards configured by the admin for your school. Subject-based setup → You’ll see standards configured by the admin for the subject the blueprint course is tagged to. From this list, you can select the standards you want to use in the blueprint course. These can then be synced to all linked teacher courses.
Link Teacher courses and sync content
Once you’ve created a blueprint course, the next step is to connect it to teacher courses and manage how updates flow. All syncing is one-way: changes made in the blueprint push down to teacher courses, but never the other way around.
Associate courses
Navigate to Blueprint course name → Course settings → Associated courses Click the ‘Associate a course’ button to view the list of available teacher courses.
The list of teacher courses will vary depending on the setup type: For a course-based setup, it displays all available teacher courses. For a subject-based setup, it displays only those teacher courses mapped to the same subject as the blueprint course. Filter by subject, grade, or grading period to quickly find the right course. Select the courses you want, then click ‘Next’.
Confirm whether you want to sync all content or specific items. Accordingly, the content from the blueprint course will be synced to the selected teacher courses.
Linked teacher courses appear in the list with: Number of associated classes Last synced date and time and staff name Status - Active or Archived Tip: Linked courses can be removed at any time using the three-dot menu under ‘Actions’ on the main page.
Sync updates
If you add or change content in the blueprint later, you can use the ‘Sync updates’ button to push those changes to already-linked teacher courses.
Navigate to Blueprint course name → Course settings → Associated courses Click the ‘Sync updates’ button
A pop-up lists all new or updated items from the blueprint. Select whether to sync all items or only specific ones, and click ‘Sync to teacher courses’. Accordingly, newly added or modified blueprint content flows to all associated courses.
Items that cannot be synced (because they were edited in a teacher course) are flagged with an error icon under the ‘Pending updates’ column. Click on the numbered updates to view their details.
The ‘Pending updates’ screen lists all blueprint course content that is yet to be pushed to associated teacher courses. A yellow warning icon indicates items that cannot be synced because they’ve been edited directly in the teacher course - those edits are preserved. Other items may simply show as pending, meaning they are new or updated in the blueprint but haven’t yet been synced to the teacher course(s). Track sync status
After syncing, you can easily monitor whether items have been updated successfully in teacher courses. Sync status is displayed using icons in both the Course plan and Standards sections of the blueprint course.
Course plan
Each unit, task, folder, or resource shows an icon on the right. A green sync icon means the item is up to date. A yellow circular icon means the item is pending sync or has encountered an error. Standards
Sync applies at the page level for the entire set of standards. A green sync icon at the top confirms everything is up to date. A yellow circular icon signals a pending sync or an error. Note: These icons are for tracking purposes only. You cannot trigger a sync directly from either of these pages.
Sync history
Each sync action is logged for transparency. The history is visible in both the blueprint course and its associated teacher courses, so everyone can track updates consistently. The ‘Sync history’ tab shows:
Status of the sync (successful/failed) Synced updates: total number of updates. Click this link to view the details of the updates Synced to: number of teacher courses (visible only in the blueprint course) Synced by: staff member who initiated the action Lock course content
To maintain consistency across all associated teacher courses, you can lock specific items in the blueprint course. Locking prevents edits or removals in teacher courses while still allowing teachers to add their own new content where permitted.
Course plan
Depending on what is locked, the level of control differs:
If an item is locked, it will always sync with the blueprint. Teachers in the associated courses will not be able to edit or remove it. Any changes must be made at the blueprint level and then pushed via sync. If an item is unlocked but not edited (or assigned for task items) by the teacher in their course, the item will continue to sync with the blueprint. If an item is unlocked and edited/assigned by the teacher, it will stop receiving sync updates. Additionally, it cannot be locked from the blueprint, and the lock icon will appear greyed out. Lock unit planner and unit flow: Both the unit planner and all items within the flow will be locked, making them non-editable and non-removable in teacher courses. Lock unit planner only: Only the unit planner is locked, while items within the unit flow remain editable in teacher courses. Lock unit flow only: Only the items in the unit flow are locked; the planner remains editable. If a unit has already been edited in one or more teacher courses, it cannot be locked from the blueprint. In such cases, the corresponding lock options will appear greyed out. Note: The lock/unlock options are available in both course plans and unit planners.
Lock folder and all items in it: The entire folder and its contents will be locked, preventing edits or removals in teacher courses. Lock folder only: Only the folder itself is locked; items within it remain editable. Lock folder items only: Only the items inside the folder are locked, while the folder remains editable. Note: Teachers can add new units, tasks, and resources within a linked teacher course at any time, regardless of the locked status of existing items.
Standards
Standards are locked at the page level using the lock icon at the top-right of the page. If a standard set has been locked in the blueprint, teachers cannot edit or remove it from their courses. However, they can add new standards if needed.
How updates appear in teacher courses
Once a sync is complete, teachers see the applied changes directly within their linked courses. A notification pops up when they enter the course, prompting them to review the latest updates from the blueprint. They can either click the ‘Review changes’ button in the notification or navigate to the ‘Sync history’ tab within course settings to view the latest updates.
A pop-up window displays a detailed list of all updates pushed from the blueprint, providing teachers with a clear view of what has changed in their course.
In the ‘Course plan’ section, blueprint items display a blueprint tag and a lock/unlock icon:
A locked icon means the item is controlled by the blueprint and cannot be edited or removed in the teacher course. An unlocked icon means the item is editable in the teacher course, but will continue to sync unless it has been modified from the teacher course. Additionally, teachers can enable/disable the ‘Show blueprint lock indicator’ option from the display settings.
On the ‘Standards’ page, teachers can click the ‘Manage’ button at the top-right of the page.
Within the standards view, a lock icon will appear next to locked standards. Teachers can also use the ‘Hide locked standards’ toggle to quickly focus on unlocked learning standards that are available for selection.
Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
Q: When would updates from a blueprint course not sync to a teacher course?
A: Updates from a blueprint course may not flow into a teacher course if the linked course already has its own edits. Sync will be blocked in these cases:
Unit plan sections: If a teacher edits any part of the unit plan, those sections won’t receive further updates from the blueprint. Tasks or resources: If a teacher modifies or customizes an item in their course, updates to that specific item from the blueprint will not sync. Assigned tasks: Once a task is assigned in the teacher course, further updates from the blueprint won’t override it.
Blueprint courses help maintain consistency across teacher courses while giving teachers the flexibility to add content as per requirements.
